Who’s Right?
The Life of a Mainstreamed Deaf Kid How do I start off? I see a lot of things on DeafRead. Well, one thing I can say is there is a lot of tension in DeafRead. For starters, DBC and AGBell. First of all, let me talk about DBC. I feel DBC has some right ideas but [...]

Random Mental Sound Effects
Infinite Jess Being deaf doesn't mean a quiet life. Actually it's usually too loud and full of sounds, except they are all in my head, so that if I want some quiet I got to practice meditation for at least an hour before it'd start being quiet. I don't know if this is because I was born hearing, or [...]

ASL in song
Infinite Jess I rarely enjoy songs signed in ASL as much as I enjoy the original english versions. It's just my preference to have direct language and not interpreted. HOWEVER...this interpreter has shown me that a song can be enjoyed in translation just as much, if not more–difficult to do, though. [link]

Butterfly
Infinite Jess They say that some native american tribes consider the butterfly a symbol for deafness. Not sure why, or if this is even true, but I like the thought of it for some reason. This morning found this butterfly on the ground, not moving. Thought it was dead but then realized it was only hurt. I've moved [...]

Follow Your Heart
The Raging Hands "Follow Your Heart" were the words that had a strong impact on me, Let me tell you the story of how it impacted me. It was in 2004 that I just had enrolled at Virginia School for the Deaf in Staunton. I met a young man who was at that time, an eighth grader. He was a intelligent student. He and I clicked and became good friends. I started admiring him and copying him ...

Deaf Schools vs. Hearing Schools
The Life of a Mainstreamed Deaf Kid I am currently in the hearing school. There are pros and cons about going mainstreaming. One of the pros is the fact that I get good education. One of the cons is the fact it is hard for me to understand hearing people sometimes. I am thinking about going back [...]

A Blessing or a Curse?
The Life of a Mainstreamed Deaf Kid Hi, my name is David Mayes. My mom is Karen Mayes. I know for a fact that after you read this, you'd say that my mother brainwashed me. But this is a choice of my own. I was born in Greece, New York, but I grew up in East Rochester. But currently I am living [...]

Deaf Culture
The Raging Hands Imagine living in a world in which you have not heard a single sound, not even lyrics from romantic songs. Imagine describing your feelings with only hands. Loud claps are replaced with waving hands. Imagine not having a verbal voice. Imagine learning about the world, how things work, chemical reactions only through your eyes. Imagine being in a world that is muted an...

Cochlea Implants and Deaf babies using ASL
The Raging Hands I want to say what is on my mind about this hot topic in the Deaf community. As a culturally Deaf person who grew up in a hearing world. I feel that Deaf babies should not be implanted. Why is that? When I was born and diagonsed as Deaf, my parents and family looked at many options offered but ultimately chose to use Sign Language and used it with me from a early age....

Why should we cherish ASL?
The Raging Hands I want to express my thoughts about our crown jewel of our culture, the gem we hold most dear, American Sign Language. ASL has been our language since Clerc and Gallaudet formed it during their fifteen days maiden voyage aboard the Mary Augusta, coming to America to set up the first permanent school for the Deaf, American School for the Deaf in Connecticut in 1817. Si...

NAD and AGBAD
The Raging Hands As you all probably heard of what is happening between NAD and AGBAD, I want to commend Bobbie Beth Scoggins on what she did on NAD'S behalf. I personally am disgusted with the letter that AGBAD wrote to Pepsi Co. because AGBAD does not accurately represent the true core vision and values of the Deaf community. NAD is the true representative of the Deaf Community. I t...
