Durr Responds to JKF?s article in the Washington Post
ASL Community Journal Editor’s note: This is the editorial Patricia Durr sent to the Washington Post in response to JKF’s opinion piece published last Saturday, October 14, 2006.  While I am not an alumni, student, faculty or staff member of Gallaudet, Gallaudet is a very sacred place to me.  For me as a hard of hearing person - it was also [...]

BoT Must Start Doing Their Job Now!
Mishka Zena The BoT had been derelict for quite a while. They ignored the first no-confidence vote passed by the majority of the University Faculty. The letters of grievances by Gallaudet Faculty and Staff over the years were not responded by the BoT.   The comments by Gallaudet stakeholders regarding the presidential candidates were brushed away.  Nobody came to talk to [...]

A Step Forward: Possible Guidelines For The Future
Mishka Zena We need to discuss the establishment of new guidelines so DPN and Unity for Gallaudet won’t be repeated. Both protests occurred due to a stalemate between President Appointee/BoT and the Gallaudet stakeholders.  We need to have a BoT who is responsive to the Gallaudet Community, but the BoT have not learned a lesson from 1988. So, [...] [...]

October Theses from the Paddy Wagon
testing_the_truth Fernandes and Jordan has to go! Recent events showed the innate nature of hidden oppression perpetuated by the so-called inter-mediators toward the Deaf Community. They are the worst villains of our age. Who are these inter-mediators? They are those Deaf people, or people working with the Deaf, who anoint themselves as inter-mediators from the ?hearing world? toward [...]

Tent City: Revival
Mr. Sandman [This is an extremely long post; my apologies! However, I believe it is a good, if lengthy, summarization of the events from October 2-11 regarding the protests at Gallaudet University.]On Monday, October 2, "Tent City" was revived on the slope facing Florida Avenue NE, and protesters again gathered around the front gates. This time, media attention focused rapidly, [...]

Update At 6:30
Mishka Zena It’s 6:22 and I’m out here at the 6th Street gate with about 120 other people.  So far everything has been peaceful, with the exception of a few students blocking dps from coming in.  Luckily some other protestors pushed them out of the way so dps could come in.  The point of this is not to block the gates, [...]

Brother of Hunger Strike Protester?s Note
Mishka Zena For your information, his dad and I used to work together in Biology Dept  at Gallaudet for several years before I resigned for health reasons some years ago. He was a great professor in an ivy league university in South Africa for 30 years before he retired. While teaching at Gallaudet, he was very popular [...]

Concerned Students Take a Step Forward
DeafDC.com Yesterday marked exactly one week that Concerned Students for Gallaudet has been up and running and we have over 75 members. While that is not a huge number compared to the 1,800 students on campus it?s a remarkable start for a group that is only one week old. We have received over 200 signed petitions by [...]

Deaf in the City 366: Monday Morning news & tea roundupMy History of the Gallaudet Protest, Part One seems to have gone over VERY well. Gallaudet--On The Outside, Looking In
Karen A fellow writer from Epinions recently sent me an email asking "Do you know why the students oppose the new president so fiercely?"I was in a hurry and quickly replied, "Protesters don't like Jane-- they say she can't lead, that she's cold and that she's "not deaf enough"(even when it is denied, this comes up). They're also saying that the search process was flawed [...]

Deaf Benedict Arnold?
Show Me Deaf Community I have a question! Are the deaf BoT members behaving like Benedict Arnold? Are they committing treason? With the recent announcement by Brenda, it appears that someone is being a traitor and not respecting the rights of the students, staff, faculty and alumni. Is Tom Humphries "Deaf Benedict Arnold"? Is Ben Soukup "Deaf [...]
