ASL Live! - and the Winner is…
NAD Conference Pictures will be uploaded soon. Douglas Ridloff of New York took home the crown and the grand prize of $2,000 for three stellar performances — of a poem entitled “Dreamful” in which he pantomimed and used props; “Earology,” an utterly original view into the journey of sound through three different ears — hearing, profoundly deaf, an...

Socialization for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Kids
A Deaf Mom Shares Her World As I was driving home from the mall today, I watched the six kids in the back as they chatted with each other.  The two high school boys were conversing using mostly their voice, with some signs thrown in.  The three girls were animatedly using American Sign Language. Eyebrows arched, shoulders shrugged and cheeks puffed as [...]

Grieving before One Can Take on AGBell
Musings on communication DBC came about partly as a need to grieve by its Deaf followers: they and their family relationships have been profoundly harmed by the pure oral approach and by inappropriate emphasis on speech and hearing. Most grew up in hearing families and were shut out of family interactions by default. Even enlightened parents who tried to inform their ...

Diversity Focus at the NAD Conference
NAD Conference by Leonard Hall The Diversity Strategic Team (DST) presented a report to the NAD board and delegates that brought up issues on diversity that surprised many white Deaf Americans. Racism is still an lingering concern among deaf people of different races. The recent racial incident involving an African-American deaf student at a deaf school [...]

Another Vlog by Carl
Kalalau's Korner A vlog discussion by Carl Schroeder: Carl discusses how difficult it would be to use ASL to tell about his essays. The English language has its own composition for coherence, and so does ASL.

Clarification and Integrity
People of the Eye Greetings all There has been lots of discussion about a comment I made in this People of the Eye website by Aidan and Ben and others Here is the controversial comment: “I have had a great deal of contact with the core members of DBC and I have NEVER seen any of them pronounce radical views. How does [...]

tuesday evening: thoughts on learning ASL
Inaudible Nonsense Monday was a whirl so I didn't have time to put down my thoughts. Now — two five hour classes and a couple study sessions later – here are my thoughts on learning ASL so far anyway. The Gally summer school is intentionally intensive. Both less and more so than I had hoped. Partially from my own doing. I will [...]

DBC: Bilingualism, Audism, and Deafhood?
Mishka Zena In my last post DBC: Confusing Messages, I asked for clarification about the statements of a DBC representative quoted in the newspaper article as audism and cochlear implants weren't mentioned in the mission statement of Deaf Bilingual Coalition: “The two groups will bring their competing agendas to Milwaukee in separate national conferences this week: on...

What DBC is really saying…
Der Sankt Speaks... Since I've been getting a few comments here and there against my criticism of leaders of DBC and their personal beliefs. They are entitled to their opinions, which is justifiably so. But I would like to present to you some food for thought (italics are my comments and click on the quote to go to [...]

Lines in the Sand
At The Rim De Sankt says. I am unsure having a heavy bias to one aspect of deafness or another is qualification enough to lead a deaf group. There is no such thing as unbiased in the deaf world in reality. Der Sankt starts "In order to be a leader of a group or a community, you have to be accepted by the community.", but ALSO able to communicate to others OUTSIDE it, since...

2nd Day At SEE Conference
I'm adopting a deaf child with Ushers, now wh Okay, so I decided to go back for more. Today was definately a full day of mind-blowing signing. I actually did the best at fingerspelling which I feel is my weakest area so if that is giving you a clue as to how the rest of my day went. I learned today that a lot of the people that are in my class are actually ASL signers who are learning SEE. What I learned from...

Responsibilities of a Leader
Der Sankt Speaks... I'm noticing an interesting trend among commenters about DBC and their team. One of them went as far as to say that their personal beliefs are irrelevant to DBC's mission. I beg to differ on that. Leaders, regardless of what, undergo a vetting process. Usually it is the press that does that. Now, for the Deaf [...]
