Where is our Abraham Lincoln?
DHH-CommUNITY By Erin EspositoRalph Waldo Emerson once somberly said, “We heard the results coldly and sadly.  It seemed too rash, on a purely local reputation, to build so grave a trust in such anxious times.”  Emerson was speaking in reference to the selection of Abraham Lincoln as the Republican Party’s candidate of choice for the Presidency [...]

ASL Dragon Within Each of Us
Kalalau's Korner ASL Dragon within each of us could also be called the witness. The role of our witness is not to interfere in the changing language, but to see and understand. ASL Dragon doesn?t rest?it remains awake even when we are dreaming or in a dreamless sleep. It does not need to see through our eyes because ASL Dragon is magical.Information is basic to anything we can see in [...]

Alternatives in Town Building
Marvin Miller (Laurent, SD) We are currently exploring our alternatives to building a brand new town from scratch, and at this time, we are focusing on Spencer, South Dakota. We just sent out a letter from The Laurent Institute to all lot owners in Spencer last week, and we have received favorable response thus far. It’s still too early [...]

MicahBrwn's Xanga Zero Hour...Tomorrow is Election Day. The day when we, as a people, go to the polls and choose who should represent us for the next two years. As you can see from the predicted makeup of the 110th Congress courtesy of electoral-vote.com on the left side of your screen, things look dire for the Republican Party. It's all but a given that the Democrats will take the [...]

IS ASL THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION TO DEAF EDUCATION?
Show Me Deaf Community In regards to Berke Outspoken about teachers having low expectations of deaf students, I agree with her. I have seen a lot. In the last 35 years of working in deaf advocacy, I have seen a lot of low esteem among those young deaf adults in the community. It is a result of failed programs and failed mainstreaming concept that was supposed [...]

Gallaudet PR: Protests NEVER happened?!
The GU Private Investigator In an incredible display of revisionist history, the Gallaudet PR Department completely removed EVERY press release, editorial, and letter link regarding the protests from the www.gallaudet.edu website! I’ve gone through my previous postings and found only one press release that was still on Gallaudet’s website, but not linked elsewhere on the website. In [...]

ASL Dragon and Silence: A Difficult Lesson
Kalalau's Korner ASL Dragon?s definition of language and culture is wrapped up in silence. The essence of ASL Dragon is transformation?a surge of information, knowledge and communication. Our Deaf mind has its own ways, but it is not so different: the Deaf mind understands whatever repeats information, knowledge and communication from the past.?CL:1 I FISTKISS CL:1? in ASL basically [...]

more positive notes on deafhood
What's that you said? After the sturm und drang of yesterday, I wanted to delve into some articles, blogs, and folks on the net that I've found very interesting and providing lots of food for thought...One of the first blogs I did come across was Deaf in the City. He has a number of very thoughtful posts and I always appreciate reading his stuff. Even when I don't agree with him, he lays [...]

ASL Dragon
Kalalau's Korner ASL DragonLadies and gentlemen, yes, there exists a dragon in ASL.Once in a heavily foggy morning my childhood chum and I went out hiking and soon we got lost in the middle of deep forest with many deadends and false turns. When we stopped to rest, this dragon appeared. For a moment our breath did stop, and then we remembered ourselves. I quickly found my camera and [...]

One Step Forward, 49 Steps Backward
Bay Area Perspective on Gally Deaf world, to me, is always a step forward and 49 steps backward. Reactionary versus proactive, a person once taught me, is an automatic inclusion in any Deaf issues. When I passionately fought against Audism in my graduate program, I learned several things the hard way. I fought, long and hard, and nearly gotten myself kicked out of the program; all because of a [...]

Boston Globe Op_Ed Gets It All Wrong
Berke Outspoken Boston Globe columnist Cathy Young has written an editorial column on the Unity for Gallaudet movement that gets everything wrong. Not only that, it is very biased against the Unity for Gallaudet participants. The FSSA's work is far from done - there is a lot of misunderstanding in the hearing world, and even among deaf (not Deaf) people, that needs to be corrected [...]

ASL Dragon's First Lesson: To Be Born
Kalalau's Korner ASL Dragon exists in all of us. This dragon sees and knows everything from pleasure to pain. Everything the dragon sees has its roots in the Deaf world. Our body and mind may sleep but ASL Dragon is always awake. It takes a lifetime to learn what ASL Dragon has to teach, but everything that will unfold over years and decades is available in our first lesson. Here we [...]

Silence is NOT Golden!!
Deaf Tea Time Silence from BoT is making me nervous. I understand that BoT will not meet again until December at which time they will discuss transition plans and interim post for president. I ask, why didn't they put that on the table on the same day they terminated jkf's designate as president and get that over with. AND put on table to discuss what to do about jkf. Why are they [...]

Low Expectations from Teachers
Berke Outspoken Gotham Gal reports on a fundraiser for the League of Hard of Hearing. Near the end of her blog post, she gives the example of a teenage girl telling the audience how her teacher had told her she could only expect to work at McDonald's. That had me wondering how many teachers out there are telling their deaf and hard of hearing students they have low expectations of [...]

Fire Destroys Part of Deaf Home in Liberia
Berke Outspoken Just saw via a blog that there was a fire that destroyed part of a deaf children's home in Liberia. Details are on the website of ChildrenConcerned.org. They are working on building a new home, and also a school for the deaf. I don't know if this will be the first school for the deaf in Liberia or not.
