My Hearing Loss and My Son
SpeakUpLibrarian The person who's been most affected by my hearing loss has to be my son. He's the one who talks about the most unexpected things leaving me in a daze. He's the one with the longest stories told in an excited manner that leave me lost somewhere in the middle. He's the one who helps me out in public places when I don't quite catch what a shop clerk or another customer ...

I look so I can hear.... Yesterday at the LINK Convention, during a presentation about lipspeaking, we were told about a petition to be presented to 10 Downing Street urging the Government to provide more funding for lipreading classes. I Can No Longer Stay Silent
Please face me, I read lips This isn't a political blog.  Mainly I'm dedicated to hearing loss and deaf issues, but I feel the time has come to speak up.  I'll admit I've been an Obama supporter from day one.  All other political issues aside, from a deaf perspective I liked the fact that he said he would support the disabled, that [...]

In what language do Deaf people think?
TAZ W0LF In what language do deaf people think? I think in English, because that's what I speak. But since deaf people cannot hear, they can't learn how to speak a language. Nevertheless, they must think in some language. Would they think in English if they use sign language and read English? How would they do that if they've never heard the words they are signing or reading p...

FCC Upholds Its Decision To Fine a TV Station
Ed's Telecom Alert All.. This article is self explanatory. Quote: "FCC upholds $25,000 fine against KUSI-TV San Diego for failing to provide adequate visual warnings to hearing-impaired viewers during coverage of California wildfires occurred in October 2003". FCC Stands Firm KUDOS to the FCC for doing that despite the lawyers from the TV Station that challenged the fine....

TigerDeafie News just in has seen the vote for the $700bn ‘bail out' plan fail in the US, and the markets dive yet again.  The only thing that surprises me about these events is that anybody was ever surprised about it at all.  As long ago as 2002 there were warnings that this is what would [...]

On teaching the deaf
Filipino Deaf from the Eyes of a Hearing Pers A school for the deaf is unlike any other regular school. You can compare them based on many aspects. Even schools for the deaf also have varying degrees of difference. One basic distinction is its class size. Hearing schools in the Philippines normally have a population of 50 or more per class, depending on how depressed [...]

RESOLVED! Thanks to Persistent James..
Ed's Telecom Alert All.. Check this website out. Basically, James Northcutt had problem with "interoperability" between SNAPVRS and HOVRS. He wanted to use OJO, but use HOVRS as the preferred VRS provider. When HOVRS put in new platform, then problem started. James persistently addressed this problem with both VRS providers and contacted the FCC on this.&...
