It’s a small world: Visual graphic of interconnections...
Jared's Global Microbrand There is one line that you will hear often from the members (hearing or Deaf) of the Deaf community: “It's a small world!” I had many opportunities to expand the circle of people who I know when I was a student at NTID/RIT with thousands of other Deaf college students, visited friends at [...]

Brick explains the recent FCC decision clearly in ASL. They have the 10-digit phone number technology in place, and completed a demonstration recently. The transcriptions of the two calls [...]

Music: An Aural Sensation, A Visual Pleasure, Part One
Devil’s Playground Music is an art form that appeals to the aural sense [hearing], in the same way that painting, sculpture, photography, writing, et al, appeal to the visual sense [seeing]. Listening to music, for me, is an “either/ or” proposition. If I can hear it, I will listen to it, if I can't, I won't bother. The [...]

To Implant or Not To Implant a Child Who Has Never Been...
An American Mom in Tuscany: Jordan's Cochlear Do you or do you not give the okay for a cochlear implant to a child over age 7 who has never been exposed to any form of amplification? Good question. My answer: NO. I spoke to an audiologist at the Gala Dinner of the NHS 2008 Conference and her answer was a resounding "Maybe." The gentleman sitting next to me, who worked for Advanced Bionics agreed with me.We were d...

What makes CI's effective ?
At The Rim Someone asked recently, what IS the effectiveness of a CI ? To me its relative to so many things. The value of any aid to sound, be it hearing aids, or CI's or a cupped hand to the ear, is via the individual's perceptions. Many people get immense gratification from the barest of sound understanding, and are able to use it.Some will complain, the CI or aid hasn't do...

Followup on H.R. 6320 - Subtitles in Internet Videos
gwallgofi Here's a wee follow up on my previous post about the legalisation in USA - the HR 6320 bill. Here's one damned good reason why that bill's timing is vital for us... The Family Guy series will be online videos based - you're not going to get it on TV. You'll get it over the Internet. And [...]

Activation Day!
icedpinkchampagne So, I got my nifty new ear turned on today. It was a rough morning due to me trying to make it there on time but that doesn't matter- what matters is... well, my initial impressions! I'm sure you're all curious. So here I go- It is now about 12 hours since I officially became bionic. It started off quite unpredictably-because there were no bells or whistles (Both figu...

The lecture circuit! ;)
SURROUND SOUND Tuesday morning found us up and at 'em again...Gloria met us down in the lobby at *ack* 7:30. She came bearing coffee, though, so that helped ease the transition into my day. We took the rental car since we were checking out and wouldn't be back the rest of the day, and Evelyn and Norm followed us in their car.Advanced Bionics has a very special "lecture circuit" call...

Put Away That Cellphone!
Say What? Today the new law on cellphones went into effect. It prohibits all drivers from “using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. Motorists 18 and over may use a “hands-free device.” Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or a hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle.” In other [...]

How successful is cochlear implant?
Filipino Deaf from the Eyes of a Hearing Pers My last post made me think deeper. Are cochlear implants proven to have a high success rate? The reason why I'm having serious doubts is when I was putting sub-titles on the video, I'm having a hard time listening to the speeches made by those two kids who have undergone the implant. So instead of deciphering what he is saying, I simply put [inaudible speech].

Mother Fights System to Get Help For Deaf Son
An American Mom in Tuscany: Jordan's Cochlear Mother Fights System to Get Help For Deaf SonBy Brian WalzelEditor Published in the Tomball Magnolia TRIBUNEThe hours after a baby is born are supposed to be filled with happiness and elation, not shock and disbelief. Babies should be crying in their mother’s arms, not being run through a battery of tests. But that was recently the case for a local mother and her husb...
