in which King Jordan is quoted as saying that Jane Fernandes will not resign...*after* the Faculty's overwhelming vote earlier today to demand her resignation. Has anyone else seen similar stories?

Incredible. He doesn't care about Gallaudet University.

That should come as no surprise. That's been the response from IKJ, JKF & BOT since the decision was made. If you performed a student poll tomorrow, and it received an overwhelming student objection to JKF, you KNOW what the response will be. You've seen time and time again. JKF: "I will not resign" IKJ: "I support her", BOT: "We've made our decision and stand by it".
I'm not surpries, and I don't think anyone else should be either.
washington post is running it in tuesday's edition. in it, King says:
"Calling it a sad day for him and the school, Jordan in a statement
last night said that Fernandes "will not resign."
He called her an agent of change who is eminently qualified but has
alienated some on campus by introducing high academic standards that
he called "unpopular but necessary."
excuse me? he's been, like jane, playing the 'not deaf enough card' up til now, and suddenly
it's too-high acedemic standards the protesters are upset about? as if deafies want it easier on their studies? ok, yes, SOME low reachers do, just like at any university, but that's not what what actually happened. fac. and staff have stated that under jane's provost leadership, acedemic achievement has declined over the past six years.

ps. sorry to hear you're leaving tomorrow. i'm back on campus friday when the march to the capital is scheduled. Perhaps you can return or extend your stay for the homecoming weekend?
IKJ is a practitioner of philosophical oppression.
