Dear Dr. Brueggemann,
We have been constantly inundated with messages about Dr. Fernandes’
insensitivity to the faculties of both Pre-College and the University
itself. It has become clear that hers has been an extremely autocratic
administration, which has left many members of the two faculties scared
and unhappy.
In the beginning, I was upset over the composition of the three
finalists recommended by the search committee to the Board of
Trustees. One of them had absolutely no university experience and not
even a doctorate which was one of the stipulations, I believe. This
left a lingering suspicion that the slate was stacked, so to speak.
But, naturally the Board had to select the only qualified individual,
Jane Fernandes. I have been willing to go along with the Board’s
decision, as, after all a university president is appointed by the
Board and not by the students or any other group.
Today I find myself with an entirely different perspective.
Accordingly I am withdrawing from the Transition Committee if it
involves Jane Fernandes, but would be willing to stay on for any other
president-designate.
It is with great reluctance that I share with you my feelings that the
Board of Trustees should reconsider and request the resignation of Jane
Fernandes as president of Gallaudet University.
Sincerely,
Merv Garretson

Like a breath of fresh air, Dr. Garretson is coming out as an official with a courageous statement. Kudos! May others come forward with equally honest statements pleading for restoration of sanity to this unprecedented situation.
