Canadian Gallaudet Alumnus Hosts Toronto Tent City to support the demands of Faculty, Students, Staff and Alumni of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
On Sunday October 15, 2006 at 12.00pm at Riverdale Park on Broadview & Gerrard Ave East, over hundreds of Canadian Gallaudet Alumni students stage a demonstration to call upon Gallaudet University Board of Trustees to resign their position or implement to support demands of faculty, staff, students, and alumni, (FSSA):
- That the Board of Trustees re-opens the president search process, ensuring equitable processes that support diversity and social justice, and
- That no reprisals be made against any of students, alumni, staff, or faculty involved in the Gallaudet University protest
Gallaudet University protests enter sixth day and a rapid growing number of protests hosted by several tent cities across North America and Europe call upon Gallaudet University Board of Trustees to support the demands.
“Toronto Tent City sends a strong and clear message to Gallaudet University Board of Trustees in support of the demands of Gallaudet Canadian students on Gallaudet campus, says Janice Drake, Class of 88, and an organizer of Toronto Tent City
“The majority of the Gallaudet University community wishes for Jane Fernandes, President, to RESIGN!” says Megan Youngs, Class of 03, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya. “To get the message to the administration of Gallaudet University, the ever-growing Gallaudet University community has banded together and hosted Tent Cities all over America, Canada and Europe to send the message to Fernandes and the Board of Trustees at Gallaudet University.”
“Gallaudet University protest deserves international attention to call upon Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University to resign and implement the demands of FSSA immediately ” says Chris Kenopic, Class of 91, and former President, Canadian Association of the Deaf and former Chair, World Federation of the Deaf Congress in Montreal.
“The greatest honourable thing for Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University to do is to resign immediately from their position or support immediately the demands of FSSA” states Gary Malkowski, Class of 81, and North America’s formerly first Deaf Parliamentarian.
