Audism: Gallaudet Interpreter Ban
The rally started off with Mr. Noah Beckman saying that we have the adminstration by the balls. He spoke with Interim Provost Michael Moore earlier in the day, and is set to have a meeting with several people this evening around 9 PM. We’re all waiting anxiously to hear the result of that meeting.
Next up was Bobby Loefller, an interpreter and graduate student. He encouraged the students to speak up and complain about the lack of access to interpreters. The adminstration, comprised of DEAF people, is cutting off the students’ voices and telling them they don’t have the right to equal access.
Several other speakers went up, many focusing on the interpreter situation. Tara Holcomb made a comment that until yesterday’s faculty meeting when MJ Bienvenu gave a presentation on audism, she didn’t realize how badly she was being oppressed. She talked about how much she’d struggled to find an interpreter on Saturday when the media was around, and had considered it a normal thing. The struggle for communication is “normal”- THAT’S NOT RIGHT! This is a deaf university. They send out letters to parents of prospective students and say this school provides equal and open access to communication for all individuals, but it does not.
Good rally, I was really inspired. THERE WILL BE ANOTHER RALLY AT 10. SEE YOU THEREayala920’s Xanga Site
