  • 9:45 AM: Status of the Protest

A videoclip of the SBG' President's presentation to the BoT:  Noah Beckman, SBG President, Addresses the BOT - blip.tv (beta)

The BoT continues to be DEAF to the students.

Their response? That it is a stalemate. Not just that, they also said "they won't and cannot meet the students' demands"

(as conveyed to me by a student protester).

My questions: Why is the BoT being DEAF to the students and the faculty? Who do they really represent? Gallaudet Community or Jordan?

Also, I was informed that Jordan and Fernandes will be giving a private party with the Staff Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Board of Trustee. This is interesting because there won't be any private party with the BoT and the students, nor one with the BoT and the Faculty Members. FYI, both the students and the faculty members have spoken out against Jordan and Fernandes, but not the SAC.  Could it be because the staff don't have any job protection, so they are afraid to express their real feelings? The fear factor is completely understandable, considering the history of reprisals practiced by Jordan and Fernandes against those who have spoken out.

Wow, thats really serious thing because they refuse to have a private party with FSSA and they are having a private party with Jane and her disciples! Wow! Thats so low

Sounds like some VIPS are "mind-deaf" to the rights of the students.

I just finished watching the videoclip. Why did the BoT keep saying they are 'stuck'? As the BoT, they do have the last say how Gallaudet, including the President and the President Appointee, is operated.  I am truly at a loss to explain the action or to be more accurate the lack of action by the BoT. Does anyone have any explanation why the BoT is acting this way?   The more I listen to the faculty, the staff, and the students over the last few months, the more I can understand why they feel there is no resource left except for a revolution. There has been no effective dialogue between the Gallaudet Community and theBoT, nor any between IJK and JKF and the Gallaudet Community.

Mishkazena, it's very simple.  Let me break it down for you.  Gallaudet hired the services of an established presidential search company that has conducted over 30 successful college president searches.  There was a Presidential Search Committee (PSC) composed of students, staff, alumni, and faculty.  There were interviews, public and private.  Everyone at Gallaudet had ample opportunities to participate, and many did so.  Out of 27 or so qualified applicants, 3 were selected as finalists, and JKF came out the winner.  The entire process was legitimate from start to finish.  No hanky-panky at all.  What is more, the BoT was UNANIMOUS in its choice of Fernandes.  Really, they didn't have to be -- a majority vote would have sufficed.  I believe the BoT understands that SOME students, faculty, staff, etc., are disappointed with their choice.  There are probably lots of perfectly valid reasons why those students/fac/etc are dissatisfied with JKF.  Nobody's perfect.  I'm not saying all those protestors are wrong.  Simply that they have not been able to substantiate a single one of their claims of wrongdoing by the PSC, IKJ, or the BoT.  I'm sorry to say, this makes the entire protest look weak.  Just look at Jesse Thomas's blog for example.  When a BoT asked for an example of oppression, Jesse could not give ONE.  Now you don't have to wonder by any more, Mishkazena, why there has been no dialogue between FSSA and the BoT.

Actually, it would help a lot if the BoT does talk with FSSA. Their failure to do so reflects their disinterest in interacting with the Gallaudet Community, especially when there is an ongoing protest.
  • Working_Brain
Actually, there've been several reports of BoT members visiting Tent City and talking to the protestors at various times since May.  The protestors have had ample opportunities, both in person, by letter, email, by blog and vlog, to present their case to the BoT and the world.  Noah Beckman had his chance today.  Nice speech, nothing new.  Let's face it, the protestors haven't done a good job of detailing their specific, provable concerns.  All we've ever heard are "flawed process, ineffective leader, social justice, lousy ASL, doesn't say hi, not deaf enough" ... hot air, buzz words, same same, no facts.  Maybe they'll have better luck this weekend when the BoT is in town and will meet some students.  Here's an idea -- why not have a party and invite the BoT?  Why should the protestors wait to be invited to a fancy-schmancy party when they can have their own?
  • MishkaZena

Did I say students? I said FSSA, including the faculty members.

Fernandes is the one who claimed she's not Deaf enough. And she kept repeating it long after the FSSA, including the faculty members, made it clear it was not a cultural identity.  She failed to mention that she was given a no confidence vote, not once, but twice.

Anyway, it is not me that you need convincing. You need to convince the Gallaudet Community on the campus, whom the world is listening to.

  • Working_Brain

No.  When the announcement was made that Fernandes will be the next president, someone at the initial protest had a sign that said "Not Deaf Enough."  The media saw it, and made a huge deal about it.  Fernandes adopted it as her battle cry, but she didn't make it up originally.  Just another example of how the protestors shoot themselves in the foot on a regular basis.  Who knew that sign would haunt them forever?   JKF nailed it when she said she's caught in the crossfire of a culture war.  Anyway, if FSSA is to be believed, the majority (81%) of the students and faculty at Gallaudet already support them, so it's fine to use "students" interchangeably with protestors and FSSA.   There's no question we're all listening ... but I don't think the world is getting the message you want us to "hear."

  • MishkaZena

FSSA had already explained that "Not Deaf Enough" wasn't the issue, but Fernandes kept on with that misleading statement for months. Remember there was a group of Deaf Faculty Members with oral backgrounds with a list of reasons why they opposed the appointment of Fernandes. So, there you have it.  Guess what? I am also Deaf with an oral upbringing.  So your argument doesn't hold water with me, nor with others.

The protesters at the Tent City are the students. FSSA constitutes of four entities, Faculty, Students, Staff, and Alumni. No, it is not fine to use 'students' interchangeably with FSSA because that would be inaccurate.

Gallaudet Administration and the BoT are not listening.  Don't worry. We will help the world hear the real message from the Gallaudet Community with the assistance of the media. The world will then realize they have been fed erroneous statements.
