REVIVAL OF TENT CITY

At 8 am, members of the Gallaudet community will come together to camp out peacefully in protest of what continues to be a flawed process at Gallaudet University: a state that we fear will lead to a flawed University.

Elsewhere in the nation, communities will also join the protest by setting up their own tent-cities. One such instance is the Bay Area GUAA Chapter. They will be setting up camp at the California School for the Deaf - Fremont.

Bring your tent and join us. Teach-in at Tent City. Wear your Unity for Gallaudet T-shirts, buttons, or ribbons. Bring your cameras.

Several letters have gone out with stated concern about the oppressive nature of the Guidelines for Expressive Activities and Assemblies (sent to the campus community from Dr. I. King Jordan). Those guidelines are as flawed as the Presidential Search Process and we will not follow them. To do so would be to acknowledge the validity of the document.

UNITY FOR GALLAUDET!

This email is circulating through the campus community through
pagers, emails, IMs -- because the students who tried to send this
through the campus email system were not allowed to do so.

**EDIT**

"...the Bay Area GUAA chapter is not the host of Tent City in Fremont - it's the larger Bay Area Deaf community and the FSSA Representative, Karina Pedersen, ran the show. The NorCal GUAA chapter wrote and approved 3 resolutions in support of you, the students. More info will be posted on http://www.bayareapovongally.blogspot.com/ later tonight. Again, we are behind you - we are as appalled and furious about what is happening as you are."

Thanks, jennycat88 , for the clarification and the www link!

Hi, Elisa. I'm now in FL, so I'm just catching up with the news. This is unacceptable that the students are not allowed to use campus e mail system to communicate. Talk about oppression. I feel it is essential that university students be able to speak their minds freely without any interference. I am not there, but I am with you all in spirit! Ciao. Elizabeth

Hoow'd they prevent each and every student from circulatiing this? Not disbeleiving, just curious. Searchbots keyed to "Unity" etc? I mean, that's gotta be a big job, screeening thousands of emails...

Mr. Pnutt, I checked with several other students and they told me it is true. Check my blog about the TV Dept.

Gogogo Gally students!!! This is so brave of you guys! We are behind you all the way! One tiny clarification - the Bay Area GUAA chapter is not the host of Tent City in Fremont - it's the larger Bay Area Deaf community and the FSSA Representative, Karina Pedersen, ran the show. The NorCal GUAA chapter wrote and approved 3 resolutions in support of you, the students. More info will be posted on www.bayareapovongally.blogspot.com later tonight. Let me clarify about the "email campus system" -- this is a system for students to send mass emails to all students about events, organizations, etc -- these emails are screened by a person (or a group of ppl). I hope this' clear now?

Jenny, thanks for the clarification about the bay area!

We need

1. empowerment
2. more autonomy
3. social justice

Empowerment to make our words heard.
Empowerment to make it impossible to ignore us.
Empowerment to influence decisions in our own matters.

More autonomy in following our ideals.
More autonomy in maintaining our culture.
More autonomy in selecting our leaders.

Social justice to make our education competitive.
Social justice to give us real chance for success.
Social justice to get rid of inept leaders,
get rid of oppression, fear and intimidation, and
get our school back to normal business.

I think that the whole idea is absurd! Funny how the "revival" of the tent city happens to coincide with midterms.  Last semester we were inundated, and overwhelmed with information, often times pressured into conforming with the belief that JK was a bad choice, or the process is flawed.  Granted I agree the process is not without it's downfalls as well as short comings.  It's a bunch of college students who want to avoid taking test by standing on their laurels.    The reason the organizers of this renewed tent city were prevented from sending out a mass email is because it was not an approved demonstration on campus, that is they did not get the appropriate permits.

The revival of Tent City coincides with the BOT meetings this week. That.

Pissie, 2/3 of Gallaudet faculty, and more than 50% of staff want the unfit leader to step down. If I would be Fernandes, I would comtemplate on the will of people and would not force myself down the throat of those who don't want me to lead them.
