Personally I  find the fact that the DPS taking pictures omnious. Students should be permitted to exercise their rights of expression without intimidation.

i think the DPS has alot of problems.  Besides the fact they can't really sign, have injured deaf students/ the public, officiers who use and deal drugs to students, and the supervisor that ingores it all.  DPS has alot to be investigated for.

I don't think taking pictures of DPS staff is helping the situation.  Think about it -- do you really want them mad at us?  Why provoke them unnecessarily when they're only doing their jobs?  Keep in mind that these folks are paid to help us and protect us... you might need one of them some day.  DPS is not your enemy.  They're good folks like anybody else.  Let's grow up and act like adults.

Working Brain:
DPS is just a fancy name for "SECURITY GUARD" which is what they are.

They get paid peanuts and the only requirement for being hired is a high school diploma & a clean rap sheet. These people are mostly "cop-wannabees" and act as if there were a TV camera on them, except when they're playing "secret agent" & photographing/sabotaging protesters.

Working Brian, I am still waiting for your response to my question in my blog.

If you feel DPS are doing their jobs, why don't you ask the students themselves how they feel about the DPS? Don't tell them to grow up and act like adults. Gallaudet has a severe problem with paternalism shown to its students, like you just illustrate with your comment.

They are giving the DPS a taste of their own medicine. Why should the students be respectful to DPS who disrespect and intimidate them?

MishkaZena, I didn't realize you wanted a reply. I'm just expressing my opinion here, and thought you were too. No reply needed. My point was that DPS is just the hired help. Students taking pictures of DPS doesn't help the situation and will just make them mad. You're right that telling students to grow up and act like adults smacks of paternalism.

WB ~

I take it the by "growing up" you mean not rocking the boat.

Admittedly the protesters are more passionate than I am. That's a result of age. If their messages are too fiery for some, at least they're not accepting the status quo.

Perhaps the real problem with the selection process is that it is a page ripped from the book written in Milan: "we know what's best for you. You are not ready to make the choices yourself. Shut up and accept our decision on your behalf."

It STINKS. And the only way its' gonna change is if someone rocks the boat.

Besides, where were you in May, when the real decision to oppose this was made? Then, if ever, was the time for internal debate. Sides & goals have already been chosen. Your messagses all seem to boil down to a point where they're indistibguisable from what the Administration wants. If that's so, cool - but instead of debatinng the points raised, all you seem to do is try to a) discredit the participants, and b) put the brakes on their efforts. Neither of these is part of a "grown up" debate.

Gessh, Guess DPS are the most fear people on the campus when it comes to the protest.
Guess they know students can overpower them, so they, instead, just take pictures
to twist the stories on what students actually do.

What to Do??

Get their attention....
Drop donuts.....
Grab their camera away from them...
