Overzealous and poorly informed groups....

Overzealous and poorly informed groups have determined that the least restrictive educational environment for deaf children lies in wholesale mainstreaming in the regular public school system. We need to come to grips with this problem of naivete at the unique communication barrier improved by hearing loss. We need to work on amendments which will clarify the intent of this law and ensure that deaf children are not lost in the shuffle of this blanket legislation. The law must clearly state that most appropriate placement takes precedence over simplistic interpretation of the least restrictive environment.

I think we perceive among educators, rehabilitation personnel, and government people a developing sense of acceptance and attentiveness to what the NAD is seeking for the deaf population. This is evidenced by increasing involvement of deaf persons in affairs which concern ourselves.
