Trading Klondikes For Health

Next week I go for a mapping on my working cochlear. I want to try something different to get my comprehension on the phone in particular up a notch. In two weeks I will have Advanced Bionics (the manufacturer of my CI) and my audiologist run a few tests. They are actually going to do some electrophysiological measures with my cochlear implant.

Not sure what all that means, I just know that I have a right side implant that tugs at my face when it hears sound. So something is going on with the electrical impulses. Just need some sound.

It would be cool if we can figure it out and get it working. I would give a Klondike Bar to be bilateral at this point. It has been a bit of a frustration. So test away my good people, lets see if we can introduce sound to my right side. The left brain has been hogging it all.

Also in two weeks time I get my regular seminar for "Occulo-motor re-education" Or "How to even think about being considered for Cirque du Soleil with no balance in the inner ear, so use the eyes my friend"
This Physio involves meeting every couple of weeks and working on tricking the brain to think that things are stable. You see, when my brain seeks out information on "stability" it asks the inner ear (one of the three guidance systems, and the most relied on). But my inner ear system is broken. So the brain then "freaks" a bit as it goes to the eyes (the number 2 system) for help on balance. The eyes send a signal to the brain that ends up being "bouncy" or "shaky" because the eyes are not used to being the main balance system. So this therapy helps "re-train" the occulo motors.

Janet improves daily, and quite possible could come home in a few days. CT scan done today to confirm tumor is down where it belongs.
She has been in the wonderful care of the world renowned Princess Margaret.
Smart specialists, nice people, but she is now over three weeks in there. Time to come home!

Not her longest stay by any means. Her usual fall visits are between 8 and 10 weeks, so we caught a break I guess. She also usually arrives home sporting a Hickman line, that she keeps well into the new year. It has been a regular fall/winter fashion piece the past few years.
This year she will be sporting two new pieces for the fall/winter season; A PIC line, and a Trach. I told her all the babes on all the runways will be copying her look! Not sure how long the PIC line stays, the Trach I think will be around for a couple of months.

The trach will cause the most commotion, as health care folks will have to come every 2 days to suction it out! Like we really don't I need more health care workers in our life these days. All three of us would love to settle into a world that seems relatively normal. you know work, dinner, television, bed, get up and do it again. But we seem to live in the world of Health Care. A world that involves medical staff, medical buildings, and lots time spent and travel to and fro to seek the good advice and attention of the aforementioned.

Janet will go on a regime of Atra (a drug that is really mega/mega/mega doses of vitamin A. Enough to make your head spin) and Volproaic Acid (not sure what this does, but a chemo that she has had before, and they will try again). This is what the good Oncologist recommends to fight Leukemia. With Atra at $4700 for a twenty day supply, we thank the Gods of Ontario Government Health Insurance.

So with the good willing and if the crick don't rise, next week could be a diamond week. We have had far too many granite weeks this past year. As I say, some weeks are diamond and some are stone. The rocks have been pilling up around here lately.

The nice weather we had all week is pulling out, and rain with cold settling in for a long November.

Matters not!

The forecast is for health, better health, some bilateral hearing on the horizon.
But most important the future has family together again!

It has been a while!

I better run off and clean before "Mom" gets home and sees the empty Klondike Bar boxes all over the house.

I'll blame the boy of course.
Hee hee!

Warmest,

David

Wonderful news David, for all your family.
I'm sure Janet will not care in the least what the house looks like.
A house is just a house--all she cares about is that she will be HOME!!
Good luck to you also on your upcoming mapping.
Keeping your whole family in my prayers.

Great to hear your good news! I hope your training goes well -- it sounds like you're in a positive frame of mind and that's a good thing.

I'm sure Janet is ready to get away from the hospital. I'm delighted to hear she'll be home. I know how much you've missed her!

I love hearing good news!

I must google Klondike Bar to see what you are talking about! I hope Janet gets to come home as planned and all goes well. I WISH WISH WISH your darn 2nd implant would kick in! Must be so annoying knowing it's in there but not working!

omg - someone doesn't know what a Klondike Bar is...I'm shocked. The best chocolate covered ice cream bar!! Dude, I assume these are all normal steps you have to take with this CI - yes?

Great news about your wife. I had to deal with my husband when he had a trach - but just memories now. Hoping you get your diamond week.

I'm hoping things will get better, bilaterally for you and that Janet gets healthy.

Shame on you for blaming your son on your, um, mess? (Just had to say that, being the prime housecleaner in my house...)

I would give you a whole package of klondike bars to pass out if they can fix it so you are bi... I can not imagine in my wildest fantasy what all this has been like for you... I will say this however you are so good at describing and sharing that I do feel I can ALmost grasp what this journey has been like and I am always amazed at the strength and determination and wonderful attitude you maintain.

Yay!!
Diamonds are wonderful because they can catch a ray of light and beam it in many different directions.
Health insurance is a HUGE blessing and I'm sure Dan helped with the eating of some of those Klondike bars. (Right??)

What a dreadful blog friend I am...

The last couple of weeks with my lungs in recovery mode, I've focused on posting and a few comments. Everytime I look at you in my reader, I say to myself "I'll save that for this evening when I have more time because David's important".

Then I come home from work and collapse after dinner and sleep for 4 hours before going upstairs to bed. So instead of feeling important, you probably think I've forgotten you. And I have not!

I'm so glad Janet is coming home soon and I wish that you both of you had the excellent health that you deserve. I would ship you a case of Klondikes door to door if it would help you to hear and Janet's tumors to shrink!

Hugs!

Hi David,
Glad everyone is doing better and Janet will be coming home. I looked up the electrophysiological measures and I think this can be used to objectively evaluate responses from both implants. Hope they can do something about this. Good luck next week.

David, please know I'm sending SO MANY good thoughts, vibes and prayers to you and Janet!

I hope you have a diamond week indeed, because you both deserve it so much.

It will be wonderful if they can get that second CI up and running for you. It sounds like you've got lots of good people behind you, helping to get to the bottom of things.

And you know I am in awe of your Canadian health care! LOL Thanks so much for your support with my own insurance woes.

Hugs,

Wendi

Hello David,
I found you on a comment on Kay's Thinking Cap. I have taken about an hour to read past posts to understand who you are. You seem to have a HUGE fan base of friends who make comments and support you in your daily fights. I love that you call your son Guitar Boy and his name is Dan. That is exactly what we called our Daniel when we blogged about him: "Guitar Boy".
I wish you well. I pray for your recovery and that of your sweet wife, Janet. Your wonderful blog has a fun name and great explanation.
God bless you and yours.

seriously? $4,700 for her meds for a month? OH WOW. It's things like that that make me miss good old Canada and its socialized healthcare.
