The Deaf Child

A Mythology of the Deaf Experience

05.09.01 - Wondering About the Past

54th clip. Title: Wondering About the Past. 3:16 minutes long. Total: 4:56:01 hours.

Finally, after several hours of cleaning up the codes, all the video clips of this myth now play inside their windows, rather than into another window. For those who prefer full screen, you could go to the myth channel in YouTube, click on word “view in high quality” on the lower right corner of the video screen (not all clips have this, though) or/and then enlarge the screen.

I find the pace of posting clips of the myth a little too slow for my taste. You might share my taste here, too. Yet, I prefer making comments about each clip in this website and have the clips at youtube (and the deafvideo.tv) be posted without any commentaries. It takes time to make comments and prepare each post as opposed to just uploading to youtube. A couple of my friends kept asking me for more deaf history videos and I have said to them that I will post them only in conjunction with its related myth clip. For example, I have already edited a video of Laurent Clerc’s birthplace and will not upload it until the 5.14 clip is posted (when the Deaf Child becomes a teacher).

I appreciate your patience in the slow pace of posting each clip. As in food, good quality comes from slow “cooking”.

Find out here on how the Deaf Child first began dealing about his/her past, especially from being with the human owl, VisMa. Click away and enjoy . . .

Click YouTube or DVTV if above download too slow or if you prefer full screen. Thank you.

Myth Commentary: This clip narrates a situation where the Deaf Child first told other deaf classmates about her/his past. The conculsion s/he reached might reflect most deaf people whose past is highly unusual to the point that they prefer not to explain.

Deaf History Commentary: There are no direct connection between this clip to actual deaf historical events. However, for some deaf people who have convoluted past, they usually do not talk much about it due to various reasons. It could be because they do not know anything much about it due to parents being hearing or refusing to talk about it. It could be because it was so painful for them to talk about their hearing or deaf parents. Or simply because it is too complicated to explain in few signs.

There is one little detail at the beginning of this clip that do have actual deaf history background. It is about the blue clothes and black cap. In fact, students at the deaf school in Paris actually wore same type of clothing in the 19th century. I do not remember where I found this information. I will have to look for the source and will insert it here once I locate it. Probably Harlan Lane’s When the Mind Hears book.

  1. Still watching, dear one. :)

This reminds me of a plight I have myself, about revealing that which I know to be true, knowing full well that other’s may perceive my truth as laughable…

Something we all may deal with…
