——-
(5:23 minutes) this video was made several days after my latest post and before the Deaf Hope Tea Party.
rough translation:
After posting the open letter to Deaf Hope, I went to the Deaf Hope website and clicked on the email links to the Board members and the CEO and left messages there. Waited a few days. Nothing. After sharing this with a few people, I was contacted by the CEO who explained that they never received my message through the website and referred my message to the Board President.
I am not happy with the responses. The President simply told me that I am welcome to attend a Board meeting to discuss the matter. They meet monthly on the 2nd Wednesday. As an organization that specializes in domestic violence and being familiar with other kinds of violence such as abuse, molesting, exploiting, slander, and cyberbullying, I expect them to constantly think and dialogue about how to raise the bar in the Deaf community, especially in our area, the CA Bay Area.
They are claiming they are doing something about problems in the Deaf community and on the internet by paying Benjamin Vess’ way to Bay Area where I reside for their Tea Party. Ben lives in Virginia, on the other side of US.
Ben become renowned the past summer for his part (among a few people) in the “community violence” against certain Californians and the Deaf Bilingual Coalition which included the 700 participants and the 6 generous skilled presenters at the conference.
Fortunately, many of us still are able to rise above the “violence” and continue work and support for Deaf babies’ right to ASL from the start in order to get the best bilingual education possible. Yet, there are also many people who were shattered from all that was said on Deaf Read which framed DBC in very negative and false way.
In spite of all this “violence against the community”, Deaf Hope still thought it was fine to support this behavior by bringing one of those leaders of this to their event. Deaf Hope has given several “excuses” such as saying that Ben Vess will be made to apologize, etc.
Nevertheless, their decision and action are wrong. I feel hurt and violated by this. They did not show me any compassion, nor any willingness to critically examine their decision and action and make appropriate changes, i.e. canceling Ben’s trip.
Another concern is their website. Access to them through their website isn’t working. Suppose someone is desperate for help from them, suppose someone is upset with the staff and needs to talk with the Board members, they will probably have to wait and probably get no immediate response.
To this day, I am still waiting for an appropriate response to my open letter. They apparently chose to ignore my explicit message and act as if nothing happened. I also understand that they brought in Ridor. That doesn’t make sense to me. I was told they are planning a kind of agreement to make peace on the internet. However, I have doubts about this idea. Several reasons:
1) The Tea Party is at a private residence. Not open to the public.
2) It costs each person $40 to get in.
3) They process each person who attends the party to maintain control of who goes..one needs to pay and be approved before given the address of the party, from what I understand.
4) Evidently, it will be a small crowd, no more than 50 people and probably the max will be 100. A very small part of the huge Deaf community here in the Bay Area, denying many many more Deaf people of this community of the chance to debate and process the idea of cyberbullying for Deaf blogosphere out in the open.
Also, they never officially announced in their flyers or website about the party that this topic would be discussed there.
I am uncomfortable with all this. The reason I am bringing this up here is because I worry about our community that Deaf Hope is supposed to serve. They are a leader here. I expect more from them. I expect them to provide the best possible service and support to us. I expect them to be fair and courageously stand up for justice for Deaf people. So far with this Tea Party decision, I do not feel that. They seem willing to make people like me feel extremely vulnerable. They seem to shift blame on others, including me. In reality, they are the ones who have the control here and can make the appropriate changes.
Again, I am still waiting for a proper, respectful response from them, recognizing my hurt, and showing that they are willing to stand up for the Bay Area community by not recognizing or endorsing any known abusers. For example, despite my open letter, they have not changed their plans regarding Ben Vess. By the way, they have claimed that many people wanted Ben Vess to come here. If that is true, it disappoints me that the community are also willing to openly endorse abusers, especially choosing them over DBC and people who have truly fought hard to bring justice to Deaf people past, present and future.
I will wait and see what happens after this.
However whatever happens, I truly cherish our people, community and language. Thank you.
(update: Since the Tea Party has happened over a week ago, I have learned a few more things, but basically my viewpoints are the same.)

Simple. As always compounding good intentions there are Deaf on Deaf tactics raging on serving vested interests. Bad karma prevails.

Thank you for taking your time to share your concerns about DeafHope. I hope they will repair their website where anyone can leave message at anytime. They are registered as non profit agency therefore they are mandate to have their website accessible for anyone who would like to leave a message. They need to take action ASAP. This is a serious matter.
I watched your video and I am glad to hear that you and Ben plan to continue and discuss some concerns. I was shocked that Ben was selected to be a role model in our community especially when he talked nasty things about you and Joey Baer’s work performance and his interaction with students on someone’s blog last summer…all because Joey believed in DBC’s mission. He did not do any crime. He only shared his passion about DBC’s movement (DBC was/is not a non profit agency…I hope that some will understand the difference now). I am not defending Joey but for others as well who went through the same thing when former DBC members threatened to report about leaders to their worksite. They were angered that they did not get what they wanted. That was their childish payback time. That was so wrong of them to do this.
All I can say is that there are some people in our community are very jealous of you. No question asks. I know without question that one person who joined NAD and DCARA is being sent by Deafhope and some other people to bring you to destruction. I am at the lookout for you. You have dedicated your work and time for a long time. You did many wonderful things for our community and yet some of them do not like it nor appreciated all things you have done so they are trying to pull you down. I am glad to see that you are getting some support and continue with your mission. Be strong.
Another thing…if DeafHope is actual a non profit organization then I am not sure why they did not want the tea party to be opened to the public and screened who could attend or not. If some were rejected then I hope and pray that they will bring attention to the state or media. This sounds like corruption to me. CNN needs to hear this story.

I agree that issues should be resolved to move forward but it takes two to tango. Right now, we have two different takes on the subject. While many of us perceived Ben’s attending Tea Party a bad one, I see Ben’s good intention and learning experience toward healing. He issued an apology and will work to promote DBC. Now that to me is progress and I feel everyone should have an opportunity to learn from mistake and grow from it. After all, this is America!

Penny,
some clarification is in order. I
t’s not mandatory to have a non-profit organization’s website be 100% functional. It’s just more of a “WISE” thing to have, especially for an organization that deals with a lot of stress and hurt and thus emergencies. I too hope that by now they have fixed this website problem.
I believe that a non-profit organization should always strive to do their best in the area of service they are committed to…as organizations that are exempt from tax, it’s a responsibility not to mess up things, at least intentionally. But again, a non-profit organization is often run by volunteers or people getting low pay, so it’s a lot of hard work although often blessed. I would not go out to accuse one of serious corruption or cover up unless there is plenty of evidence and hurt that has been done.
Steve,
you said “two different takes”..huh? Where is the other take? I haven’t seen much of that. But my message is not about whose viewpoint is better or right. No. It’s about my own healing and standing up to what I consider a bad and hurtful decision on the part of the Deaf Hope organization.
Yes, Ben Vess has issued an apology and I appreciate it. We are talking. It takes some time to clear up all the mess he and others were responsible last summer. After this, which I am truly hoping will help resolve things on BOTH sides, I intend to move forward with more vlogs discussing real issues in the Deaf World that I’ve wanted to for a long time.
“This is America”…hmm… how about placing more value in the Deaf World and working together to fight the injustice that has been putting it down so long…and that is primarily in deprivation/denial of Sign Language(s) from ALL Deaf babies and children, and secondly, in deprivation/denial of a positive, healthy Deaf identity and culture for ALL Deaf people?
Let’s continue to talk….and not sweep things under the rug. One quote I shared with Deaf Hope’s CEO earlier today that I want to share with you all…by MLK, Jr
“Peace is not the absence of tension but rather the presence of justice”
There WILL be tension…but as long as the goal is justice, we need to tolerate the tension.

Ella-
Thanks for clarification and you are right everything you said here…but if some were rejected to attend the Tea Party then it is very wrong and this needs to bring attention. Rodney King stated “Can we all just get along?” I hope this will occur in our community.

Hi Ella, Stay strong and Don’t give it up. I know it s not easy task as usual however I m here to support you all the way. No matter what!
Don’t let them get you that easily.
Ridor is out of order. For pete ’s sake!
Keep your chin up! :0

Now you taste your own medicine for not getting a response from DeafHope. I received no response from you a long time ago to have your workshop in Chicago on December 5, 2008.
Crab Theory is the culprit. Many deaf people tend to stab on any leader ’s back . I have many scars on my back. Anyone could not find a space on my back to stab;however, they can stab on the same scars that were healed.
Just do your best. You do what you do. You do not have to do to please anyone. Here is a good quote…”Watch what they do, not what they say”!

Really? Scoff about the contradicatory behavior by the DeafHope organization since its organizational name is deafHOPE.
DeafHOPE seems not really practice any transparency itself, instead of being accessible and open to the given community.
That really sound some kind of sinister ploys on the part of the DeafHope’s clandistive (msp) approach by shutting out any community members like yourself, Ella without having the open dialogues.
The real problem with Ben Vess for being too implusive without thinking pretty hard before doing anything.
Is Ben Vess playing some people/organization to pay for his trip to the West Coast from NYC. So he could visit his hearing male lover in San Diego to save $$$?
Ben Vess currently reside in NYC’s “East Village”, not Virginia.
Ben Vess is not a professional expert on any speciality/expertise concerned deaf language acquistion and development. Why the DeafHOPE is much willing to cover his airline trip?

Hey RLM,
I would appreciate it if you did not discuss my personal life on an online forum. Nobody needs to know where I live and whether or not I have a boyfriend. I don’t discuss these on my blog and I would appreciate it if these were removed.
Secondly, I would appreciate it if you contacted me directly about my trips to california. My visiting San Diego was on my dime and had nothing to do with DeafHope (which is in San Francisco). If you have any questions or issues you would like to resolve with me, feel free to contact me at me@benvess.com
Thank you.

Sandra,
As always you are straightforward with your comments. Little “ouch” but I accept. Feel free to contact me again about presenting in your area as we have made some changes recently.
I like your quote “Watch what they do, not what they say”…good one to “check in” whenever certain situations happen. Thanks.
RLM,
As I said before to another person in a comment here, a non-profit organization has its blessings and struggles. It’s always important to aim for the best and to keep its mission clear to the people it serves as well as potential sponsors. Sometimes it is necessary for an organization to go thru “self-study” and evaluate how they have been doing, their mission, their philosophy, etc. Getting feedback from outside can be helpful…and for a healthy community, how to give and embrace feedback can be hard…so both “sides” (give and get feedback) need to be very conscious on their approach and goals. I think if everybody can feel comfortable enough to be honest, open, firm, gentle, hopeful, realistic with each other, then true healing and growing can happen. Don’t you think?
Ben,
Thank you for pointing out that the focus of my message is NOT about you, but rather about DeafHope’s decision and action that has been hurtful to their local people, namely me. RLM pointed out an important point…how an organization handles its finances reflects their intentions and priorities. I have no idea how your flight to Bay Area was paid. I just hope the funds raised prior to and during the Tea Party are handled responsibly and reasonably. Paying for your way to Bay Area, once again, I feel is a mistake on Deaf Hope’s part…That is IF they did pay for it.
DeafHope Supporter,
I did confirm the authencity of the email address you posted “SorryIAmAnon@gmail.com” and it is not real. Therefore, according to what I said at end of my written message, I will not approve comments this way. Feel free to email me directly to dialogue in private about your concerns as long as I am not victimized again relating to that situation. My email address can be found in “Contact Ella” on the home page.

Ella,
I want to say apologize to you for getting misinformation about Rider. My friend came to see me yesterday and told me that Rider is not passing away. Rider’s father passed away. I got misunderstand and decided to jump into conclusion without making sure right information.
