Edward S. Klima

Adam @ 6 October, 2008 @ 10:01 pm

I never heard of him until I got the UCSD campus-wide e-mail about his passing. Here is a well-written obituary of him by Margalit Fox, author of “Talking Hands” which I loved.

And then just yesterday I read an article in where Klima was cited, and I am left wondering how many times I have passed over his name without any sense of recognition. He truly is a giant in the linguistics world.

  1. That’s true, Adam. He was.

I worked with him at Salk Institute where he worked for many years. Even in his old age, he still came to meet with the lab team weekly.

Thanks for posting this, or else I wouldn’t have known.

  2. We thank Dr. Ursula Bellugi for inviting Dr. Klima to work with her at the Salk Institute as well as to corroborate with her for a book on the linguistics of sign language years ago.
