WORD OF THE DAY: ACTIVIST
I’m never one for letting an opportunity to slip why, where I contribute to the intellectual development of Deaf and deaf people everywhere, Especially the deaf who love to bandy big words about as if they understood irony. Without much further ado, I present to you, the first in a series, Word Of The Day.
And what better way to start than with everybodies favourite word, Activist.
Activist (n.) Is anybody who can be bothered to turn up an activist? Is it helpful to describe a parent who attends a meeting at her child’s school as an activist? Politicians and journos reach for the same word when describing a zealous Trot scheming for a new world order. The word is preceded by the adjective militant often enough for the ssociation to linger like departed cheese. That residual activist-equals-radical equation makes protests attributed to activists easier to ignore than those undertaken by citizens. ‘Participant’ seems too bland. It’s pity there isn’t some less tendentious term for somebody, say, attending a meeting about a local issue.
Militant (n.) Somebody who bothers to turn up.
