Home Depot Self-Service Checkout Dispute

19 08 2008

Home Depot

Several weeks ago, Grant sold his selling item through craigslist.org for 300 dollars cash. Next day, Grant and his girlfriend went Home Depot and purchased a new air condition unit for 399 dollars which means he would pay the difference. It’s no problem.

When they approached cashier, he skipped self-service checkout because he doesn’t want to deal with many 20s in cash into a machine. They are already in line for human cashier but this young man from self - checkout jumped and wanted them go there. (He watch four machines) He hesitated but agreed to go for it. He immediately scanned all items including an air condition unit with his wireless scanner gun. He gave all 20s in cash ($300) to self-service checkout man — he took it the money. Apparently he’s trying to force-rush the money (20s dollars) into self-service checkout machine and it got stuck big time.

He called his manager lady to look into it. Unfortunately, she had to open a self-service checkout machine to clean out stuck dollars out. She gave us 100 dollars in 20s back, but they told her one more 20s is missing. Manager said no because machine said we only put 100 dollars into a machine. What’s more, self-service checkout man told manager that Grant screwed it up? Grant’s girlfriend (wear hearing aid) overheard him and speak out. She told manager that this self-service checkout man screw it up and want last 20 buck back. To make it a short story, they got all money back and went back to a human cashier line.

If it wasn’t for his hard of hearing girlfriend, he may not hear what self-service checkout man told manager and may end up longer to fight back through paper and pen. Who knows?

I work at The Home Depot and wanted to say I’m sorry about your experience in our store. We offer self checkout as an option for our customers, and you should not have felt pressured to enter that line.

Also it seems from your report that the associates did not treat you and your wife with the respect you deserved. Please accept my apology for that, we never want to second guess our customers and always hope to assume we can deal with you in an honest, straightforward manner. If you would like to provide me any further details so that I can follow up with this store directly, please email me the location/date of visit, etc…

Also, I want you to know that we are investing in our stores, our associates and our customers. I hope you come back and give us another try.

Thanks -
Sarah, Home Depot Communications

Whoa! Thanks for Grant’s HOH girlfriend saved the day!

Yes, there is a blessing and curse about the self-service cashiers at various stores. I am kinda wary about putting the large dollar bill like $100 into those machines and stole it off from me.

Pros and cons about the self-serve cashier machines for speed efficency and more customer control over goods and prices. I could see the inaccurate price postings immediately as compared to the hired cashiers sleathly scanned items twice or wrong price and have to call upon store manager to correct the price or total register slip, etc.

We have to be really wary of anyone hearing. One deaf guy clearly wrote down on the piece of paper to ask for the Budweiser Lite bottle. Guess what? The bartender brought the Bud Lite beer can with the metal tab off. That deaf guy tried to assure the bartender that he ordered the bottle, not the can. The bartender called upon the manager to brand that person as a real troublemaker and grabbed the piece of paper as an evidence. The bar manager asked that deaf guy to leave the premise.

Some bars tried to get rid of expired beer cans and shove them to customers. That was the infamous D.C. Eagle which the manager/owner himself was a crackhead and kicked out many people without any reasons.

RLM,

That happened to me at a bar near my home 10 yrs ago. They had a CC TV showing everything including what I wrote. The owner was a friend of my mom and I had my mom tell the owner about it and the video was checked and the bartender was fired. Even the bouncer who tossed me out wouldn’t let me back in until the owner showed up and he too was fired on the spot. I got free drinks and munchies for a year and a half. I even had my own personal seat at the bar too. The owner eventually sold the bar to pursue a wind farm.

It’s good to hear that Grant;s girlfriend saved his life for that day.
For us the deafies, life sucks, huh? My husband and I went to a required all day meeting this morning to find out that there was no interpreter being presented after I called twice making sure that they already arranged that for us. We had it rescheduled for another date.

That’s interesting story. I ususally go Home Depot self checkout if the items is small or invaluable item such wood, nail , etc. then pay small amount. If have electric items such saw, drill , washer machine then go to human check out. I don’t know why I do that way but I am very patience person so I don’t mind go human check out because I enjoy watch people around with their frustrating. lol

Cool! Hearing people think all deaf people can’t hear what they are saying. Hope they will treat deaf people right or be honesty with deaf people.

If you’re going to self checkout, use a debit or credit card - not cash. Problem solved.

I have to agree and say “deafies” life doesn’t “suck” Its due to ignorant people such as yourself Lisa that “deafies” feels inferior to the rest of the human race! This chick saved the day!!! Give her a standing *clap* Me being HOH myself never think of it as a disability but it gives me the abilty to push harder and learn more… I have many deaf and HOH friends with degrees in all industries and trust me, with the money they make their lives does not suck at all!!!

I can sypathize with your dilema. I no longer use the self check out counters at home depot. I went there to buy some items and tried to use the machine to self check out with my credit card. After prcoessing the transaction I was told it did not go through even though it said it did. They would not let me out without doing it again. When I got home I logged onto my credit card account. And sure enough they had charged my twice just like I suspected. It took three calls to my credit card company and another trip back to home depot to get it sorted out. Im with you stick to the human cash registers!!
