I decided to read Understanding Deaf Culture: In search of Deafhood by Paddy Ladd. I got that book about 5-6 months ago at Deaf Studies at Utah Valley University. I got it autographed by Paddy Ladd himself. It has been sitting on my shelf for few months because I basically have no motivation to read it in the first place. But after reading or viewing various discussion about Deafhood. Also, I was getting tired of idle arguments from various people about Deafhood. I just want to find out what's the big deal about whole concept.
About the book, I have to admit that it's bit dry at the first but after few pages- It got me curious about what Paddy have to say. I am very fascinated by the history part because I basically love the history of various cultures, people, and countries. I am only on the first chapter and I have to read the whole thing carefully and slowly. I normally would read fast but with this book, I really cannot do that.
I cannot say that I like it or not. I will have to finish the book first then do some thinking but I will blog about the book once in the while.

I understand about your difficulty in reading the book. It is one of the hardest books I have ever read myself. Do keep your eye out for my series in which I will summarize the main important points in the book as I go along.

You know what?? You too DonG, don't bother... I could care less and you know why? Cuz you will see it in your own way and it could be misinterpreted and it will just create more arguments. Is that your goal? Why not keep it to yourself? I'm just curious is what you point see to share what you read and tell how you read it to the rest of us? Think about it, will it be beneficial?
Think of it like the bible, there are 6 billion meanings of what it says and everyone thinks they understand what it means. It is the hottest subject to discuss.
Just my 2 cents...
Instead of...
"I'm just curious is what you point see to share what you read and tell how you read it to the rest of us?"
I meant...
"I'm just curious in what is your point to share what you read and tell how you read it to the rest of us?"
If it quacks its a duck I think is the deafhood believers credo. It is clear to most those that have embraced this deafhood (Despite not really being able to make much sense of any of it), are exhibiting the emperor's new clothes syndrome. Afraid if they reject it is a dusty old academic rambling, they will have missed out,and the other half of them, are frightened culture is on the skids so grasping this straw. It's all about insecurity, not ID. Ladd has tapped in to that insecurity, at least acknowledging it, and then offers his way out of it, at our expence mostly. It assists the view if you don't agree with it, you are too stupid to have understood it, I am wondering if British deaf (Who have almost unanimously rejected it and don't have these discussions at all), are more discerning readers ? You have to reject definitions at the start or you just buy in to the paranoia.
