How Do You Sign "Communist?"
Wednesday August 13, 2008
With the Russia-Georgia war in the news and many in the media saying that Russia wants to go back to the Soviet Union superpower days, I decided to update a Sign Language Word Reference Guide page to add the word "Communist." Younger deaf people may not be familiar with this sign, but the older deaf generation will remember it well: A C shape with a finger "sitting" inside, resembling the hammer and sickle of the Communist ideology. Does anyone have a sign for "Georgia" that is not confused with the sign for the state of Georgia here in the United States?

hmm, i think the way to spell “communist” would be holding up one hand and spell “D” followed by a “B”, then a “C” to finish it off.
There are two signs for communist that I know of: one is with the American alphabet “c” with an index finger tapping in the middle of the letter. The other is, based on my European counterparts, the same sign that the Black Panthers employed - a fist (American alphabet sign “s”) in the air.
I agree with the commenters above. A sign utilised by early generations during the Cold War era was waving a “C” handshape in the air. Today’s sign, in my opinion, is much more accurate in that it symbolises an icon when one envivisons a mental picture of a USSR flag.
I remember when I was in HS (1980s) the sign for “communist” was this: the sign for “red” then a fist in the air.
