"Eyes and Hands are Deaf people's souls and ASL is our natural language; we are diverse in culture, but most of all we are human beings who have the rights to be Deaf." ~ Ruthie "Eyepoetic" Jordan ©2007

When John Walsh's son Adam was abducted and murdered...the FBI would not help with the law enforcement to look for his son. They only interested to look for when cars were stolen. John Walsh had to fight for many years to get the law passed for FBI to get involved when a child is abducted. I wish we can have a new law for FBI to send adults to Federal prison for not allowing Deaf babies and children to use ASL for communication and learning. I could not finish my early dinner after watching this video.
Merchandising of hope...how sad...makes my stomach tighten up...if only half of it was as true as they suggest, it would be wonderful...
All of this would be OK if it was balanced with a comprehensive language approach that leaves out nothing--i.e. ASL and written English added to all of these.
I have to admire their glitzy advertising and extremely attractive professional PR approach, though. "Your child can talk!" Wow, how that hits parents.
If we marketed ASL like they do their instruments of hope, perhaps more people would believe in it and for much better reasons.
Ruthie, thank you for sharing!!! Really shows how aggressively avt programs and cochlear implant companies market their programs/products. They really play with parents emotions. Wow. Maybe we need to do more in aggressively marketing bilingualism?? I hate the idea of using a marketing approach with parents. Something to think about.
BTW, nice meeting you at the opening ceremonies in Milwaukee. :-)

wow....
can you put up a video of exhibitors at DBC?
Ruthie...
I admire your desire for Deaf children. This is very shocking. Where's ASL?!?
It's time that we should fight for Deaf children's right.
~Rosey
The start of the video shows "Dr. Alexander Graham Bell"--That was an honorary title reflecting an honorary doctorate, not an earned doctorate.
I saw a bunch of ASL in the video. So why are people saying "Where Is ASL?"?
Richard
Why is anyone "shocked" at these exhibits? AGBell is not about offering a comprehensive view on communication options. They are very clear about their message. They do not have to be comprehensive in their message. Why engage with them? Instead, yes, push for ASL, push for more research about using ASL especially with CIs and you will get somewhere.
Wow, what a propaganda! That gives DBC a good idea on how DBC can improve our public relations on bilingualism, especially with all kinds of people who have Deaf children. Let's do better than that, when doing Exhibits at the next DBC Conference!
Where is ASL?
NTID have a booth at AGB Convention.
Sorensen was there. refused to be on camera)
Sprint Relay was there.
Gallaudet was there. They adverstised that you can learn ASL in their summer program.
National Clerc Center have materials from KDES and MSSD.
There is one booth where a Deaf artist from Panama sells ASL arts, and also a booth that represent the organizations in Wisconsin such as Wisconsin Kids of Deaf Adults, Deaf hard of Hearing Alliance, etc. At that booth, are materials from DBC.
Ultratec was there. Some Deaf ASL can't be on camera due to that they work for the state government.I guess about 97 % are oral related while 3 % are ASL related.

Very interesting, you are right where is ASL?
