Captioned Movie access Op-Ed and other issues
Hey all, back from my little break....

Go some news to share, after attempting to contact the owner of the theater, and still no response, I submitted an Op-Ed piece to my local newspaper for publication, to call public attention to the numbers of deaf and hard of hearing in Kentucky, and my attempts to get captioned movies into our local theater.  I just received word today, that the Op-Ed piece has ben approved and will be printed soon, although no date was given yet.  I will keep an eye out for it, and post a link to it when it does come out, or post it in it's entirety on here.

I realize, from researching other attempts at getting captioned movies into theaters, that it can be a long, hard road to travel sometimes.  I'm hoping there's a light at the end of the tunnel, since I tend to be a cynic at heart sometimes.

On another subject, I want to address my silence on the whole DBC vs. AG Bell or the Deafhood issues.  Quite frankly, although I have left some comments on other blogs regarding this, I have felt no real desire to jump in, contrary to what I usually do.  The reasons for this are myriad, but the main reason is......A lot of it is stupid and childish and irresponsible.

Too many people (I'm guilty of it as well on occasion) have been responding to these issues with way too much emotion instead of using logic.  A single word or phrase or comment is turning the deaf community on it's ear (pun intended) on almost a daily basis.  While I feel there is some validity to both sides' arguments in both of these two main issues, one thing I was most disappointed about was the decision by one blogger to post an AIM conversation in it's entirety without at least changing the email addresses of those involved in the conversation.  That shows a blatant diregard for another's privacy.  I have no problem with them calling people out on transgressions real or imagined, or even posting links to their already public blogs, but publishing their email or AIM addresses without their explicit permission reeks.  No matter how you look at it, it stinks

The blogger used the excuse that he was not going to change the evidence, and that is laughable.  For example, I would, as someone trying to find out more about this situation, call to attention the fact that several pages of that conversation are missing.  Perhaps one could assume there is something there the blogger did not want revealed?  That may or may not be true, but the fact remains, by not posting EVERYTHING, he changed the evidence.  Someone once said "Numbers can be made to mean anything" and the same is true of this situation.  Without posting EVERYTHING for everyone to read, it appears as if an attempt at manipulating the public's opinion of the situation or conversation is underway.  Don't get me wrong, some of the things said were hateful and harmful and the people should be ashamed of themselves for saying those things.

All that being said, I just want to say this....WHY can't we all just focus on the TRUE core mission, which is to improve the lives and education of deaf people or kids?  There will never be one RIGHT way to do it, it will always take a multi-faceted approach using different methods BECAUSE we are all different as individuals.  What works for one will not necessarily work for another.

There, I've said my piece.  Now, I realize this topic has generated tons of comments and other blogs, but I want to let people know right up front, right now.  If it is NOT conducive to a productive dialogue, if it is just an inflammatory comment meant to provoke someone, I reserve the right to delete it.  You can call it censorship, you can call it whatever you want, but it is my blog and I reserve that right.

Captioned Movie access Op-Ed and other issues
Hi again. :) Seriously why do people need to make this more harder? Open captioned movie theaters are rare and hard to find, not many people are going to pay alot of money on gas. Gas is like over $4.00 in most places, imagine it being $10.00 right now then what? People wouldn't want to have cars anymore then what will be the point of those big companies making more cars? People need to think before they act. I really hope that light in the end of that tunnel will come because it's not fair that hearing people get everything easier and we deaf and hard-of-hearing don't, we can get alot of things but not all those things that most can get.

I agree with you when you said:

"Too many people (I'm guilty of it as well on occasion) have been responding to these issues with way too much emotion instead of using logic. A single word or phrase or comment is turning the deaf community on it's ear (pun intended) on almost a daily basis. Now why would he post an AIM conversation on a blog? That's just an invasion of privacy for the user in that conversation, I mean who needs to see that? No one and he could have removed the e-mail addresses to avoid letting those users receive spam in the coming days, people are just two stupid and childish sometimes one can wonder what he/she does all day. Very irresponsible like you said.

I also agree when you said:

"The blogger used the excuse that he was not going to change the evidence, and that is laughable. For example, I would, as someone trying to find out more about this situation, call to attention the fact that several pages of that conversation are missing. Don't get me wrong, some of the things said were hateful and harmful and the people should be ashamed of themselves for saying those things."

Okay what he did was just PLAIN stupid, he needs to grow up and stop doing these types of things.

I agree with this one too:

"All that being said, I just want to say this....WHY can't we all just focus on the TRUE core mission, which is to improve the lives and education of deaf people or kids? There will never be one RIGHT way to do it, it will always take a multi-faceted approach using different methods BECAUSE we are all different as individuals. Because alot of people just focus on themselves and not the others which is immature by the way, they can't always have it how THEY want it, they have to make things work for others as well.

I'm sorry for the LONG post but I'm just letting you know what I agree on you have alot of positive things in this post that it's just sad that alot of people don't realize it the way that we do. Have a good evening. :)

Q's for You
Have you seen "Hellboy 2" film with captions yet? Y better save your $$ until you pop in the DVD. This film seems have slow pace and spiraling storylines with lack of action in first 1/2, then more action on the climax phase.

Re: Q's for You
Unfortunately, no. Until we get a captioned theater, I will be stuck with renting DVD's. Luckily, we have a Redbox here now, so I can get it cheap! Haha The first Hellboy I thought got off to a little bit of a slow start as well, but picked up well towards the end in both dialogue and action.
