Great job, Ruthie

Yup, talk is cheap. They haven't proved it with their actions.

By the way, did the oral interpreter deliberately set back as to be avoided from being filmed? I'm wondering as we only got a brief glimpse of her, but she was missing during the interview. What do you think?

Mishkazena,

thanks! Actually she was in the video and Gary asked her to step out of the screen before we started an interview. I wish she could be in the screen and see how it works.

AGBell's mission is FOR speaking and listening. That's who they are. However, I saw that interview where you asked about ASL exposure, and I think you failed to understand what Jay said. He was saying that they do respect and have no problem with hearing parents being exposed to all kinds of tools, methods and language information. But, that the final decision rests with the parents.

Because of who they are and what they believe, you will see a lot more information about their approach.

They do not go out and say, ASL is bad. They will give parents resources such as a link or two about ASL. They are NOT about ASL, but they respect that choice.

It would be nice if DBC did the same thing. DBC could have a link or two that refers parents to AGB if the parent opts for listening and speaking after being exposed to all the information that is out there.

There is no question that if one could hear and speak, one would be more independent. However, being deaf has not always been bad. We have managed to be independent regardless, but we may have to go a bit further to achieve that. And even then, we all need services at times, such as a terp, whether it's ASL or Oral.

What we have seen clearly is that regardless of the issue at hand, we are all deaf, but with different preference in tools, methods, and/or language.

I think, honestly, that DBC would be better served if they just stick with promoting awareness about Bi Bi and not waste their time going after an organization that will not change their mission.

That approach will make DBC look better to the hearing parents.

I think Choice is important and parents will be more comfortable knowing they are dealing with an organization that allows for choice. Parents are now more comfortable with AGB and not DBC. What you want is for hearing parents to be comfortable with BOTH.

I await the opportunity to view the full transcript of the video. Most deaf people have not seen the interview in its entireity.

Remember, this is your perspective, which is argumentive, not factual.

AG Bell has to say they do not ban ASL because they are a legal organization and according to the law they are not allowed to discriminate. They may not promote ASL the way we want them to but they did not discriminate against ASL. This is something DBC has yet to learn. Due to the existing government law they can not and will never be able to say they are against ASL. But yet, their primary interest is CI and Oralism. DBC can do the same. DBC can say that its primary interest is ASL or Bilingual and yet when DBC becomes a legal organization it will learn that it can not and will never be able to discriminate against CI and Oralists. It's a 2 way street folks.

Great interview. Under communication modus on AG Bell's website, ASL is provided as an option but this is not enough. As we know, actions are far more important than talks. Actions of this organization are more on the side of hearing and speeches than ASL.

The president of AG Bell talks about independence but he is not that independent as he proclaims to be. "Oral interpreter," what a joke. Under independence, he meant no use any kind of interpreter in everyday life. But we deaf people almost never use interpreter while shopping or any events on daily basis. We can communicate with paper and pen independently. And CI users are lost during group discussions, so they need some kind of communication help as well. Nothing with independence.

Talk about propaganda! It looks as if YOU're the one dependent on interpreters whereas Jay Wyant looks independent. Shoot.

Type a transcript of your vlog, please. The hearing parents needs to KNOW that "learning to listen and talk" doesn't guarantee independence.

Also, it IS odd to see two deaf people communicating through an interpreter!

Well done, Ruthie!

I don't use oral interpreter in all my life. I always speak with the person as one to one since I can read their lips and rely on my hearing aids. However, I must use ASL interpreter for large meeting like from 5 to over people. I can't catch up the conversation at once.

Yes, AGB president was a JOKE as he had to rely his oral interpreter. He CAN read ASL interpreter’s lips as lipread as well! It's not showing independent at all. ; )

While action speaks louder than words, no need to google for more words to quiet the action.

Parents of deaf babies who make the decision on choosing oralism and cochlear implant for their children, do they already understand and know the other side than oralism and cochlear implant- sign language and deafness- can be successful too?

I have seen many kids in elementary schools who put down their CI on their desks and saying they do not want to wear them. I have seen many of parents paying so much money or blasting the deaf and hard of hearing programs for not having their children to be able to hear and understand and talk.

While the facts on the ability of independence growth in deaf people's life and the succession with using sign language across the countries, why put CI and oralism in the way? It feels like wasting money as if spending money on wars. Why not have the new ripple started and left untouched? That ripple will reach to the day when almost everyone in the country is signing? The fact that hearing people can talk and hear. The fact that deaf people see and sign. The fact that there are 2 different facts, why not blend only factually? New challenge leads to conflicts... like new president led to new wars...

People sure do know how to waste time and money, and AG Bell's bell still hasn't rung yet.

Rock on, Ruthie! Good job!

Interesting vlog on interview and your discussion.

Two things...

#1 - AGBell's claim that they would support the parents if they chose sign language for their children conflicts with its mission statement! I find it interesting how DBC is accused for lack of transparency and inconsistency with its mission. I do not see the others accusing AGBell for its inconsistency.

#2 - AGBell's bracket: HEARstrong and TALKstrong. Where is SIGNstrong? Another inconsistency!

Great vlog!

Ruthie, your vlog is very impressed. Very clear as crystal! AGB has two faced person that he said in video that he offer ASL to the hearing people. That is hypocite and deceit!

Hmmm, I will go to ABG convention someday. I will find out myself and take pictures of what brochures, bracklets, etc are on the table.

Encourage Deaf community to build a building for DBC in the near future, that is our Dream's goal!!! DBC vs. AGB!!!

Go Go Go, DBC!!! Come one!!!

dr Hococan,

Stop saying things about DBC to mislead DR.

DBC's founder, John Egbert, is an oralist and I saw him talking to hearing people at New Orleans and people say that he talks very well. DBC is not against ci or oralist people!

Please stop it!

Ruthie,

Excellent deconstruction of AGB's responses in your interview. And It is especially good coming from your "insider" perspective as an interviewer. I look forward to seeing what else you have to add.

Rogue,

If the AGB Prez were to look at the ASL interpreter's lips to lipread, it would look like he was depending on ASL itself, and of course that would be contradictory to his message, which is why he did not do this. And it is significant that he or his staff asked the oral interpreter to move out of video range so that she also is not shown to contradict his message of "independence".

Excellent vlog, Ruthie!
Another odd thing about AGB's goals: Are hearing dogs part of the "independent" package?

I agree with Candy. I hope DBC takes the path of (heavily) promoting ASL everywhere they possibly can, NOT engage with AGBell. It's a waste of precious time and energy. Parents DO have a choice and should know ALL their options. AGBell is promoting their option. Fine. You promote yours.

I am so frustrated that DBC is wasting their time engaging with AGBell. They are not interested in engaging with you, which is fine. Just go out and promote your message and keep gathering support. Let AGBell do their thing and you do your's!
