Double Up!!!

I'm going Bilateral baby!

My wish and my dream of being a "double magnet head" is about to become reality.
This morning my surgeon's office telephoned and left a message for us to call. Janet took the message off and telephoned Donna at Dr. Ned's office.

"Time is of the essence. Assessment next Monday then surgery July 23rd . Good with you and for David"?

That's right, two weeks today, back under the skillful hands of the good Dr. Ned.

Janet is concerned of course, as surgery of any type is always a risk. Especially when a high speed drill passes millimeters from my brain.
I am elated and excited about having a second cochlear implant.
Research, although very subjective, points to greater speech recognition. I also like the fact of having the sound "impulses" on both sides of my head.

My God, for the first time in my brief posting history, I am at a loss for words suddenly.
I am fortunate and very grateful for this opportunity. I do realize how rare it is to become bilateral.

Fourteen days!

Warmly and awaiting my new bi status!

David

I am so excited for you!!! See, I did a little happy dance. I just don't get why they don't do bi-lateral implantation right off the bat with everyone. We are born with two ears. One of each side. Obviously, that plan works well. What makes them think one will suffice??? I know it made a world of difference with Emmi. She can tolerate going with only one (on rare occasions of malfunction while we wait for a repair....or me to fish batteries out of the bottom of my purse!), but she definitely looses a lot of comprehension.

Tell your doc to measure right and line those babies up so you don't look all goofy with one way up high and the other way down low...... :)

YEAH!! I like going fast on some things because then you don't have to wait and keep second guessing. I'm much more a fan of get it done and over with...QUICKLY. I will be praying for you and your wife during this exciting, but nervous time.

How wonderful! It opens up all sorts of additional options for you! I've been concerned about you the last few days and how you're doing as they adjust the current implant!

I'm not too tired... just hard to sleep when it's hot, and having a sick dog that's not quite back to sleeping through the night. I still have lots of day energy, it just runs out early in the evening! (and is a little slower to start in the morning!)

Can't wait to hear all about your continuing adventures!

Congratulations! That is great news. I agree with others, it is most exciting to just get it over with as soon as possible so you can speed ahead to the next stage. Good for you!

FANTASTIC! I'm sure you can anticipate all sorts of people staring at you as you flunk the metal detector at the airport!

Best of luck! :-)

Congratulations!

I know it hasn't all been smooth sailing, but Canadian health care is sounding okay to me.

Remember this song? This is the first thing that went through my head when I read your comment:

Life’s the same I’m moving in stereo
Life’s the same except for my shoes
Life’s the same you’re shakin’ like tremolo
Life’s the same it’s all inside you

Yeah, weird, I know, but it's my twisted way of saying congratulations and I am SO pleased for you. Fingers crossed as I start the countdown for you.

Cha-cha-cha!

p.s. AARRRR!

I am personally scared of surgeries (I had one that went very badly) so I can see your wife's side of it, but OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! What great news!!

Actually Emmi's is lined up perfectly. The surgeon came in to talk to us right before they took her back, and he was telling us all about how they measure to make sure they line up. Kenny and I just started laughing, because it never occurred to us that we should ask about that! They even took into account how she stood. When her hair is pulled up, you can see how good they did!

Congratulations on going bi....tee hee (I swear sometimes I'm like a 12 year old boy).

Seriously though, that is wonderful news, I wish you the most speedy and painless recovery ever.

I don't know much about coclear implants (minus what I read here and pick up from Trish) so is this one going to be the same as the other, wait a month to boot up?

I think it is so awesome to actually get to read about what you've gone through and to be part of such a medical miracle. The technology is simply amazing and it makes you realize what awesome times we are living in. You're amazing and I can't wait to hear all about this time around.

PS Now when you feel like messing with people you can go to Fourbucks wearing 2 refridgerator magnets on your head...make sure they match though.
