Is an Implant a Legitimate Reason Not to Deport?
Sunday June 22, 2008
The Guardian newspaper from the U.K. has a report on a deaf girl of African heritage whose family faces deportation because their application to stay was denied. The family is arguing that because of the implant, the family needs to stay in the U.K. If they go back to Africa, the child's implant will become "useless" because of the absence of services.
What do you think? Is this a good reason to allow the family to stay? Is there any way to get services to implanted deaf children in less developed African countries?

I’m not for cochlears but I’m for any person who needs medical attention, or the like - I will say yes they have a valid reason to stay and complete treatment..
but with her a CI, she ll never go back to africa
Yes– I think the girl needs to stay in a country where she can have services provided for her CI.
No, families are using CIs to move to US. Kids are better off without CIs. They should be happy they can’t get services in Africa. Blessing in disguise!!
The parents are taking advantage of their child by implanting a cochlear on this child’s brain in order to stay in U.K. How did they get money to pay for the implants? Who granted the family to U.K.? They should have thought of that before leaving Africia to UK. Best to remove the implant and send the family back to Africia!
The HMF Foundation I’m involved with will put me in a position to design and implement social service programs for people with disabilities worldwide. Of course we will include cochlear implant support services.
I have to wonder why any family would have the surgery done knowing that they may be deported.
yeah, let the girl stay. Jean and Julie B are the ones who should get deported.
I have had an CI implant for 7 years and just got another. They are wonderful and life changing. as for those whom disagree please mind your own buisness I do not need your fear, jealosy and ignorance to tell me how to live my life.
Now for the lady with the implant.
This is a huge problem worldwide a lot of parents no matter what country they came from want the best for their children which is nobody elses’ buisness but it is a huge problem getting followup medical treatment because they usually have to leave the country to get such treatment.
Technically they should have applied for a long stay or permanet residency till the lady could adjust but in a lot of places you have to sieze the opportunity while the window is open.
If they are not criminals and can prove they can contribute something to society then perhaps they should be allowed to stay.
The implanted person has a great chance of succeeding with her implant and who knows what kind of life she will have if she stays. to go back is really a waste of time and resources and technology.
It is sad about all the negative Blather about the CI’s when the probabality of success is so tremendous and the future contributions such person will give back to society.
Those whom are against it should consider moving back in time perhaps a hundresd years ago when the deaf had nothing .
It is eady for them to forget that human kindness and technology has broght them to this stage where they can whine about anything they want as long as they can keep their status quo.
