A Comedy To Those Who Think.

The new Get Smart Again movie hits theaters today.

If my "rally cap" was to give me a touch more "hearing juice", I would make be my privilege and honour to make it the first movie of my comeback.

Since I fell a few steps backwards in my comprehension level, I will wait until my mapping on Monday to see if I can make the giant leap into the world of moving pictures on big screens with Dolby sound.

Janet suggested that the Get Smart Again movie be my inaugural movie since my sudden and profound deafness last September. Her raison d'etre of course is the "Cone of Silence".

I chose the name for my blog when I started blogging this year, because of the way I view the world.
To me, it just seemed like I was sitting in a cone of silence, like the re-occurring joke device from Get Smart, an American comedy television series from the 1960's. My world was in total and stunning silence, yet the comedy of life was happening constantly.
I never viewed my deafness as a tragedy. Unfortunate, yes. Bothersome, of course. But not a tragedy.

I read this quote, early on my deaf days and it stuck with me: "The World, wrote 18th-century author Horace Walploe, is a comedy to those who think, and a tragedy to those who feel".
I am a big thinker I suspect.

So while I "lived" in a cone of silence, the world seemed ridiculously funny.
I observed people flaying around in cars, circling the streets in bikes, hauling kids around while talking on cell phones and texting on crackberries. It seemed insane and funny all at the same time.
My newly honed observation skills became spidey like senses as I caught nose pickers in cars, verbal lashings at bus stops, "read" conversations as people spoke in their bluetooth devices. I was reading lips a mile a minute and catching the most unbelievable "conversations" in my new silent world. Life all of a sudden seemed funny as hell to me!

What used to be mundane in my hearing life, provided me with gut busting laughter in my new "cone of silence"

From stories in life like what seemed like a week to walk form one end of the giant sized new super Wally World. To the ever popular "Store is now dead to me" Depot taking away my fridge because they didn't like my deaf attitude. Life just seemed funnier some how in this world.

I watched in hilarity how people reacted to my deafness. They spoke louder and louder as I looked in amusement and amazement at their actions.
I loved the medical profession and their bewilderment at times at what to do with a deaf guy.
"Can he drive"?
"Should he be allowed out in the streets by himself"?
Doctors would try getting closer to me to try ears again each time. My God what do they eat for breakfast?
They would talk to my wife as if I was not even in the room.
All I could do was laugh my ass off at times.
It kept me sane.

It made sense to name my blog "Life in A Cone Of Silence".
It was and is the perfect blend of the silly comedy of life, and the funny Get Smart prop offered, and the reality of my stunning silence at times as life plays out it's concerto.
Plus it is a cool gizmo and I am a gadget guy!

The cone of silence from the 60's has the perfect story to match my life. Invented by "Professor Cone", the device is designed to protect the most secret of conversations (aka "C.O.S. security risks") by enshrouding its users within a transparent sound-proof shield. Unfortunately, Control had purchased the device from a "discount place" rather than the federal government, so it has never worked properly.
That would mirror my life in so many ways. "David we can get make you better, and we found the technology in a dollar store. Naturally, this frustrating situation provides fuel for comedy.
It would be my life to purchase my cone from "The store that is dead to me now" spit,! and not be able to put it together properly.
The "cone" does have a retro look to it, and might match my fridge.

So it is with great anticipation, and with the expectations of total silliness, and crappy sound through my rally cap, that I will do my damnedest to Get Smart Again.

Warmly,

David

David what a good explanation why you choose the title of your blog to be "Life in a Cone of Silence."
But I also think there might be a small secret crush on Agent 99.
Come on, you can tell us, we are all your friends here.

I want to see that movie too!!! We saw the previews of it several weeks ago when we saw Indiana Jones and it looks like it will be an awesome movie!

David, my CI-Borg friend! Are you sure we haven’t met as we walked about in this sometimes comical deaf life drama? The best are the doctors who move closer to your ear; couldn’t see their lips cuz they’re too close, still couldn’t hear cuz I’m stone deaf! How about the ones who turn away and talk to our wives as if we are also dumb! Gotta love ‘em though, they are just people too!

And thankfully it got good reviews. It's always a disappointment when a highly anticipated movie is no good.

Have fun!

Dead-to-me Depot *SPIT*
This is still cracking me up. Are you still enjoying your retro fridge? I do hope so. I also hope you don't spit on it!!
I was a fan of the old "Get Smart" and had totally forgotten about the "Cone of Silence." Now I really must see this movie! (Knowing my family, we will wait until we can borrow the DVD from the library. But I can hope, can't I?)

Can't wait to see that movie, myself. Having grown up when the TV show was popular (Oh, I was but a wee one!! - ha!), I want to see what these guys have done with it. I even thought it was funny when I was a kid.
And I, too, love to watch people without paying attention to the background noise. Odd people, we humans.
I left a camera question response to you on my blog.

David,
This was one of my favorite shows when I was young! I loved the exasperated chief of CONTROL! So I can't wait to see this, even if it ends up being not so great!

I love that you named your blog this even if you're not secretly a spy involved in saving us all from the diabolical plots hatched by CHAOS. You aren't... are you?

I had forgotten this from the television show. It makes perfect sense here! I used to watch reruns of it after school, and fell in love with the humor. When I saw it previewed, I was concerned it wouldn't hold up, but I'll hopefully venture out soon and see it.

I agree with bear naked. You must have a crush on agent 99. No seriously, sounds like a good movie. I also love the TV show when I was a kid.
Good thing you can laugh at the world. I don't know many people who have such a good attitude to get them through.
Remember silent movies? How comical those people looked with moving lips and running feet and no sound?

Hey! So, you could stick your magnet gizmo on the fridge when you're not using it, right? Kinda like a two-for-one deal... CI AND refrigerator magnet! That's nifty!

Martha and I were in wally world today... and we are people watchers by nature... this guy ... looked to be mid 20's was playing his AIR guitar and SINGING rather loudly.. we slowly walked by and grinned then got a bit away and burst out laughing then had to go back and walk another isle just to watch some more... I'm not sure what was more funny the guy or the others watching him! I am the proverbial cup is half full person... and somedays when Cory is blaring his sterio I almost wish I could have some silence! laughter is the best medicine thats true!
HUGS Laura

OH! The Cone of Silence! (smile) I get it now! Yeah-- I agree laughter is the best way to deal with life. I love watching people. I had to smile at your description of people talking louder and louder after you tell them you're deaf. UH-- do they know what "deaf" means? My cat gets it though. She taps my leg, then mouths the word, "meow" as if to say, READ MY LIPS. She's so smart!

I had no desire to see that movie, until now! Although, I did read a review that the TV show was much better than the movie...

Circus Kelli, sticking the magnet on the fridge isn't the party trick. No, no... it is sticking magnetic things to your head!

Yes, we either have to laugh or cry don't we when faced with these trials.

It is awful the way that people often treat people with hearing difficulties as if they are impaired mentally. I have seen that happen many times. It doesn't happen to the same degree with blind people. I think it would actually make me very cross.

I hope you do make that extra step in your hearing and get to see this film.

I lucked-out and got to see the movie last night :) We laughed and laughed. It's true to form, and brought back many happy memories of watching and laughing with my dad.

From "Sorry about that, Chief", to "Would you believe..." "Missed it by THAT much"

and of course, "I DEMAND the cone of silence!"

And Lovin it!!

Hope that you get to see, and hear, it soon!
