Speech Bloopers

Rose Godfrey’s “Happy Farter Day” post reminded me of the bloopers deaf children and people too utter entirely by accident.
Sometimes I wonder why we even bother with training deaf children who can’t hear themselves well, to speak. Like myself. I’m stone deaf but have a fair speech which came from about 17 years of speech therapy. However, my speech is all memorized and if I’m just not at my peak condition, my tongue just slips a little and I can spew out a bunch of bloopers.
For example: “Please don’t shut the door.”
Sometimes “shut” comes out as “shit.”
Pretty hilarious to some hearing people but it used to be embarrassing for me. Now that I’m older, I don’t get embarrassed anymore. It’s life. : shrug :
French words give me a lot of problems. For a long time during my college years, I kept pronouncing “Mocha” as “mo-cha” when it’s supposed to be “mo-ka.” I was wondering for a long time why the barista kept going “What?” everytime I ordered “mo-cha.”
I’ve concluded long time ago that speaking is entirely for the benefit of the hearing, rather than for the deaf.
I’m sure my hearing friends and co-workers have heard more bloopers from me than I am remembering at this moment. Do you have some to share?

Here’s a variation on the sh– sound. I was about 3 years old, addressing my dog, and in a commanding voice I ordered him to sit.
“Shit, doggy, Shit!”
My mom loves to tell this story to my friends when she meets them.

I have only known deaf people, that I am aware of, for about the last year or two.
I am absolutely amazed that anyone can learn to voice, without hearing themselves.
I’m having trouble with signing - and I can see myself….:)

Oh, with my terrible sign skills, I’m sure I’ve managed to give someone a fit of giggles along the way.

Just as fun, and I truly believe it is fun and funny, are sign bloopers made by hearing people learning sign. My favorite is an (unnamed friend/relative) who in his/her sign language class got up in front of class and in trying to sign car ended up signing ASL masturbate. The teacher was totally embarrassed - the class died laughing.
