Whoo-hoo! This is a cracked-up vlog big time! How about that guideline...how absurd to demand ASL vlogs to be subtitled while blogs are not required to provide in ASL translation!!

Oh I see! and this is GREAT! Not only that but they didn't require cued speakers, oral speakers to subtitle their vlogs as well. They clearly are targeting ASL users but guess what, we shall remain undivided and prevail!
My sentiments exactly when I found out the policy. I think if they want to soar after EQUAL access, they should require ASL-translation to all English texts made in a blog post.
Finally we do agree on SOMETHING.

I agree with your message, Mike. Seems Deaf Village should be agreeing to meet halfway - if they expect ASL vlogs to be captioned, then English blogs need to be signed. Double standard here!

Sharon, I agree. I believe that in order for diversity to work, there must be an open door policy. No need to place demands on a certain group. Let it flow between v/bloggers.
I'm under the impression that DeafRead is diverse all along with exception to some clowns, pessimists, and special interest groups that wanted to have some kind of influence. Well, good luck to 'em.

You obviously haven't even bothered to read their guidelines have you??
Since you can't be bothered to learn before you speak, the guidelines state,
"We require all vloggers to include captions, subtitles, or transcripts to their vlogs as not everyone understands cued, signed, or spoken languages"
Its saying all *vloggers* (not just ASL vloggers!!) have to provide accessibility - that includes those who cue, those who simply speak etc. I guess this kind of inclusivity is lost on everybody. I'm sure that if an spoken vlog went up, without captions/subtitles/transcripts you'd all be screaming bloody murder that it was discriminatory against the deaf.
Can't you see that this is to provide accessibility to EVERYBODY, not just those who hear, or those who sign, or those who vlog instead of blog... thats what DV was set up for - to have *equal access* for everyone involved. If you don't like the concept of equal access then obviously DV isn't the right aggregator for you. And subtitles/captions aren't mandatory. You can also provide a transcript or at the very least a paragraph explaining what your vlog (be it ASL, cued, oral etc) is about. What's so hard about that?
Dyniece, not everyone conform to the same reality you've described. I've done captioning/subtitling/transcribing in the past and it's too much work for a home vlogger. Some have the energy and patience to do that, more power to them.
I believe that v/blogging should be a spur of the moment expression of self rather than manipulated.
Diversity works if it's by respecting choices. Requirements set up roadblocks and certain vloggers felt targeted and having to translate a language that is far more rich and complex than English. Going the extra mile continues to be of personal choice rather than required.
As my ASL-skills are sub-fluent, I am frustrated that I cannot keep up with the commentary in many signed vlogs. Awww, poor me.
It makes me resolve to spend more time learning and practicing a language that I choose to study rather late in life.
For inspiration, leaving me hungry is great. For communicating the ideas, add as many communication channels as possible. Pick your goals and the cost of the alternatives.

Drmzz of course everybody doesn't conform to any set "reality" but the truth of the matter is - DV gives you a choice. Nobody's forcing anybody to caption/subtitle anything if they don't want to - but if they DO want to participate in DV then that's a requirement. Open access to equal communication is what DV is about. If that's not something that you want to do, then the simple thing to do is - don't join DV.
If somebody finds it too much a hassle to caption/subtitle/transcript their blog then they don't have to! They can submit their blogs to DR or keep them on DeafTV or whatever aggregator they choose! Choice gives you options, and nobody is demanding that *everybody* join DV, just those that want to and support the view of open communication.

AS you are a 'bi-lingual' deaf person albeit using ASL as a main means of communication, captions still provide you with access, you are NOT being denied ASL or cultural access, or undermining it, simply by providing captions. Yet you are advocating NOT providing captioned access to ASL for what exactly ? on what grounds ? It cannot be because you cannot follow text. YOu abuse the bi-linguality deaf claim by only adhereing to it when it suits you, and you get soem perverse fun over advocatinmg no-access totext readers it seems to me, why ? it gets you brownie points with the 'Deaf' community ? I wonder how they would react, to withdrawl of ALL captions to media ? Going by what you advocate you do not read, do not watch TV., do not go to the cinema etc at all because they aren't accessible in ASL are they ? Nor are people on the street. Have you NEVER read a letter sent ?
MM, no, it isn't about bilingual or access or media. It's about linguistic imposition and offence toward vloggers. I'm done with this topic so bother me none.
