Blogs of Interest
Saturday June 14, 2008
Here are this week's blogs of interest. Most were published in the past week (June 8 to June 14), but some were published earlier.
- Interpreter with ALS - Karen tells us about an interpreter who has Lou Gehrig's disease.
- Summer's Story - the ASL-CI blog tells us about a DVD featuring a young CI user who has come of age.
- Blog news of the week: Fallout from the previous week's controversy: a competitor to deafread.com has popped up: deafvillage.com.
- Hearing Aid Coverage - the Hearing Aid Action blog has an update on what coverage for hearing aids is available, in which states. (Guide comment: Although this blog is focused on Illinois, with a cool title like Hearing Aid Action, I hope to see this blog expand to cover the entire United States).
- Deaf Youth USA - Inside Gallaudet reports on the coming of Deaf Youth USA, a new organization for young deaf adults. Of course, they already have a website.
- Deaf Gene - DeafMom (Karen) tells about a rare cause of hearing loss in her family.
- Reminded of My Status - David tells how he was forced to be "deaf again" when he could not use his implant.
- Scared, But Going Forward Anyway - As part of a long post, Tasha tells how she was frightened at seeing what had happened to young deaf adults who had been implanted many years earlier, but she is still going forward with her own implantation.
- Presidential Candidate Responds Quickly - Kim tells of how the Obama camp quickly responded to his/her complaint about no captions on a video.
- Fighting Early Discharge from Early Intervention - Nolan's mother describes how she fought to prevent her hard of hearing son from being dismissed too early from the Early Intervention program. Plus she discovers later on, that the former SLP knew very little about hearing loss. (Guide comment: That's scary. If a SLP doesn't know much about hearing loss, it makes me wonder what they learn when they go to school to become speech language pathologists. Are they learning about deafness and hearing loss? Are they exposed to a variety of communication methodologies?)
- Baby CI Fashion - Parents sometimes have to be creative to find ways for their babies to wear their CIs and minimize risk of damage to their processors. Landon's mother has posted photos of how they do it for their son. (Guide comment: Good solution for a baby - as long as the weather is not hot! I wonder what they do when the weather is hot?)
- Earmolds are Tasty - AnnaLi's mother tells how her daughter ate her earmold. (Guide comment: I've heard of toddlers tossing aids/processors and earmolds down toilets, but this is the first time I have heard of an earmold being eaten.)
- Bionic Babies T Shirt - At a fundraiser for Hearing Loss Association of America, the parents of babies with CIs had them wear custom Bionic Babies t shirts. (Guide comment: Maybe they will sell these shirts on CafePress?)
- Heather Whitestone 2? - Elizabeth alerts us that a deaf girl has a chance to be on the cover of a magazine, if enough people vote for her.
- No Caveman Speech - Christian's mother wonders if she should be using "toddlerease" with her deaf son.
- At the Waterpark with a Deaf Toddler - Thomas' mother tells about the frustration of not being able to communicate with her child at a waterpark. Unfortunately, her ability to sign is limited.
- Interpreter Scam - Robert reports on a small item from the Washington Post about an interpreter coordinator involved in a scam whereas false invoices were submitted.
- Awareness - Val tells of the need to be aware - of both surroundings and her child's dependence on vision.
