AG Bell Convention 2008

Going to the AG Bell Convention in Milwaukee next weekend (I mean two weekends from now)? I sure am. I'll be coming up from Chicago for Friday and Saturday to attend one short session and to sit at the National Cued Speech Association exhibit. I'll also be attending the D/HOH social Saturday Night. Be sure to keep your eyes open for me if you want to chat with me. I'll most likely be wearing a "I Cue" pin.

I recently became a new member of AG Bell after hearing the Executive Director speak at the NCSA board meeting in Cleveland. I decided that being a member of AG Bell would provide me with more opportunities to network with professionals and parents in regards to deaf education and advocating spoken language through Cued Speech. Contrary to the beliefs of some, AG Bell is open to all that support the use of spoken language, even cuers.

If you're planning to go to the convention and want to meet me, feel free to send an email to me at: a a r o n c u e s (at) g m a i l (dot) com (no spaces) . I look forward to the convention!

We'll be there! Look for the mom and dad cueing at the glacial pace to the cutest 18-month old you've ever seen.

(But by next weekend you mean two weeks from today, right?? Hope we bought our tickets for the right date!)

How much did it cost you to pay to enter AGBell convention?

How much does it cost to attend each workshop?

Do they have cued interpreters?

I requested one so there should be, but all the info is available at www.agbell.org

Hope you'll go to DBC too. It's free and jam packed with amazing speakers. Great opportunity to build bridges.

This "Building Bridges" idea is somewhat irritating. If DBC really wanted to build bridges, why don't THEY come to the AGBell Conference? (And I don't mean just to picket, or hand out flyers, or whatever the heck they plan on doing.) Do they think they have nothing to learn from us? Most of what they write and espouse about oral education, CIs, etc. is about 20 or more years out of date. I'm sorry that some of them had negative experiences growing up... I truly am, just as I am sorry for the deaf children in residential schools who were horribly abused by both deaf and hearing people. However, that has little relevance to the way deaf children are being educated in TODAY's oral programs. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, so I'll stop, but this "building bridges" idea won't work when the bridges are only built from one side.

DBC California sent representatives to the AG Bell California State conference while hosting a rally outside the hotel. Building bridges, yes?

It is unbelievably expensive to attend the AGBELL conference in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, the DBC conference is free. With the economy the way it is, not too many of us have extra cash to splurge on a conference based on ideals that we disagree with. So, it would be great if AGBELL members who want to build bridges come to the FREE DBC conference to see what they are all about.

I sure hope Aaron will do that :)

Oh there is a toll to cross?

Okay.

Who are we suppose to pay to cross this bridge?

Guess what? It's 100% free to attend the DBC across the road. It is highly recommendation for you to see them and be able to understand what's going on!

GO there!

Since I'm not a fluent signer, would you be willing to provide a Cued Speech transliterator?

I certainly hope DBC would provide access for everyone. I

From DBC's "press release"...

"The experts will also explain why morality demands that Deaf babies should not be denied American Sign Language -- regardless of whether or not hearing devices are used with the child, and regardless of whether or not speech and listening training is provided. They will also explain why the bilingual approach (ASL and English) is the most practical, effective and humane way to raise a Deaf child."

This is why I and many others like me really don't give a damn what DBC has to say. If they believe that the only way I can HUMANELY raise my happy, healthy deaf child who listens and talks with CIs, is learning a second (spoken) language, and is reading at grade level is through ASL, then they are saying that what I am doing is inhumane. Not only inhumane, but immoral! Who the hell are they to judge me??

It's crap like that that makes me just laugh them off, and keep on doing what I'm doing. I'm sure there are many other parents of happy, healthy, speaking and listening deaf children who will do the same.

And if they really want to build bridges, why can't they at least provide a transcript of their videos? So.. yes, they're saying something about police permits... that's really important to me! NOT.

I will be at the AG Bell Conference and can't wait. This will be my families first time. Maybe we will meet :)

I looked into going to the DBC convention too, but all their informational videos were ASL only with no captions. If they want to reach hearing parents of deaf children, they will need to change this in the future!
