I just received word today, that I will be receiving my Sorenson VP 200 this weekend. I'm looking forward to getting in on this technology, after using a TDD all these years. Some of you may wonder, "What the heck? Where's he been all this time?" and that would be a good question. I've resisted using VRS for quite some time now, mainly because I did not know anyone else who used one. Then my wife's aunt went and got her one for her husband, who is deaf (the aunt is an interpreter), and I thought "Well, that's nice, but I never talk to them anyway, my wife always talks to her aunt (who is hearing), so I don't need it". Then I started meeting more and more people who use videophones. *** CORRECTION ALERT: A sharp-eyed favorite uncle pointed out the error of my ways (typing, that is) in the statement above. It actually should read "Then my wife's aunt and her uncle (who is deaf) went and got one" when talking about the VP. DOH! I need to proofread better next time!***
Now, I'm not going to advocate one phone over the other, and will go on to state that I researched, or attempted to research, several different VRS providers to see who would be the best and easiest to use. Hamilton Relay suspended their free equipment program, with no explanation, and others seemed to be regionalized providers that I was concerned their equipment might not work, so Sorenson won by default, since I knew there were a couple of their people fairly close by to my hometown, and I hoped this would expedite my request. Did it ever! 2 weeks after submitting my application, I was contacted to schedule an install.
So bear with me, people, I'm about to embark upon a new journey in my deaf travels, and looking very much forward to it. Any suggestions? Comments pro or con (but don't get childish, because simple 'Sorenson sucks" or anything of that nature will be deleted to the comment trash heap)? Who knows? Someday, it may be ME calling you......
Now, pardon me while I go begin the cleaning up process so I don't look like a dumpster diving helmet-head when I finally get on the camera.
