NOTE: I noticed that this video runs a little funny here on this blog, so you can go directly here to this link: B. Storm's "signs of [crazy]: an asl interpretation"
Now this is the type of access I've been griping about - this is exactly what I look for in interpreters interpreting songs in ASL with passion and immersed in ASL with concepts of the songs! And on top of that, treat the deaf people with RESPECT and providing them FULL ACCESS!
I am CRAZY about this interpreter!
If I were rich, I'd drag him to every concert I attend and pay him out of my pocket! I'd also drill him into a full blown Pearl Jam freak! ;)
By the way, anyone going to Lollapalooza this upcoming August? I'm going back there to see for improvements with access issues! I'm still reeling from last year! I hope they are NOT hiring the same interpreters from last year and they better have designated areas for the deaf/hard of hearing patrons to be able to enjoy music with clear viewing of the performers AND the interpreters! Qualified and certified interpreters who put their clients FIRST before themselves!
Oh, it'd be really cool if we can get this crazy interpreter to Lolla! :D

not impressed at all...
B-O-R-I-N-G...yawn
Yea ImPrEsSED!!!!
Storm is great music interpreter to this date!
Where are the others if they are out there?
Cool, I enjoyed watching the interpreter... he is really good at interpreting the song about being crazy!)
Nope, we are not going to Chicago... got the summer booked with summer camps, summer school, a trip to St. Louis, blah blah. hope the event would provide more sensitive interpreters this time.
yawing!
U SUCK ! ! ! !
If you continue to think that concert promoters has the access and knowledge to provide you an extraordinary interpreter for you, only you, based on your assumptions, then yup, you're Crazy, Mary. Hey, what about the band, why couldn't THEY arrange one? Right. BTW, isn't time to memorize the lyrics of the PJ songs eh?
Aww... those who yawned...
Did you try turning up the volume all the way up and feel it while watching?
Perhaps you could check out his other video by Marilyn Manson? That was pretty dramatic. :)
I don't know of other good musical interpreters on youtube - I'll keep my eyes open. :) Or you can let me know so I can subscribe to them!
Karen, too bad but you gotta do what you gotta do!
August is a crazy month over here too - kids' camp, our 15th anniversary, trip to Chicago and amongst other things!
I hope things are better at lolla this year too and I'd love to see more deafies there, too! :D
Peace.
hello, drmzz...I don't know where you are coming off thinking like that and coming off with that kind of attitude towards me.
There were other two deafies who agreed with me about last year's services and with the interpreters.
You don't even know what we went through with them and don't assume that it was all for me.
Take care.
Impress!!! Please keep it up! thanks!
Mary, me attitude? You're naive. I'm giving you a reality check. Don't expect things to be provided to you for your liking based on your wishful thinking, this is what I'm responding to. This actually requires advocacy and planning. Good luck.
He's pretty good. Better than many interpreters who try to interpret concerts.
He does sign ASL well - but I can understand why some deafies aren't impressed. It's not poetic ASL. For me, if I wasn't wearing a hearing aid while watching this video, I wouldn't have liked it at all. :/
and DRMZZ - I would've thought by now you knew not to assume. As usual, your thoughts are WRONG.
a deaf pundit, oh shut up.
I know what a reality check is and the reality check is that they had excellent interpreters last year but they put themselves first before the deaf/hoh clients. Lolla knew and didn't care.
And Lolla and the terps themselves REFUSED to even mention who the agency was or letting us in on who the terps were. They're still doing it now, won't tell us who they are hiring this year. Who makes the decisions.... nice! :)
There ARE excellent terps out there but got to fight for them and it IS indeed rare to get those who are well versed with bands.
DP - Yeah, I thought that might be it - no loudness to go along with the feelings, which is why I suggested turning up the volume so they can feel it!
And yes, I agree Storm is a lot better than the terps I've had at the concerts. :p
Yikes, a bad time to post today...should have waited at least 3 more weeks. ;) Oh well.
Here's a reality check for you, Mike. When people tell me to shut up for absolutely no reason, I do the exactly opposite thing.
And IamMine's real name isn't Mary. LOL.
I'll bet if Storm was the terp for I Am Mine concert....he'll also get hearing audiences' eyes off of Eddie Vedder too.
I agree he's awesome.
WOW!! BRAVO!!
You did a good JOB!
Darn....I wanna him to interpret me for the jobs. He's darn qualified.
Gotta love his blue jeans. I have always wore the hole blue jeans along with Birkenstock shoes! Peace t-shirts!
I know, know, know what I am supposed to send you....postpone thing.....been busy to take care of job searching and my cat's surgery. Gotta out of the stay-at-home Mom stuff. Pfft...Life such sucks.
Hugs as always,
White Ghost
Ah, DP... he knows my real name.
He's doing it on purpose to insult me. I ain't taking it personal, though.
Funny, that was one of the terp's favorite songs that she actually asked Eddie for a sip of his wine on the job and giving the crowd the thumbs up - while I am in the crowd and couldn't see her, but saw her on the big screen!
Thank god for that webcast evidence, otherwise no one would have believed me!
Y'all can check out the DOJ/ADA complaint me and another person have filed against Lolla and the terps here at DOJ/ADA Lolla Complaint
I wasn't there for the 2006, but one deafie was and this was with his camera with webcast thrown in and also the 2007.
Lane - totally agree with you on that one! :D Eddie actually would be very much relieved - he hates it when people stare at him. He would be happy if everyone was staring at Storm! :D
WG - it's alright, girl. I am busy, too! I aint supposed to be posting today. Bad girl, me. :)
DP, I just re-read my comment above and realized I didn't clarify why exactly drmzz insulted me with Mary.
There is a PJ song called "Crazy Mary". That was one of the terp's favorite songs at lolla last year that I explained above.
Get it now?
Alright, have a great memorial weekend!!
Peace!
Why must the deaf community fight among themselves based off on misunderstandings/miscommunication?
Iammime and drmzz, you both have to understand that concerts interpreters are hard to work with but it's not impossible to be done. I have a feeling that drmzz is not aware of the complete story that happened at Lollapalooza and their attitude behind the services and Iammime, I could interpret what drmzz was trying to say but it could be misinterpreted in an offensive matter.
What I understood from drmzz's statement is, basically, it's very hard for concert promoters to give us (deaf people like us) exactly what we want in the terms of effective interpretations like storm because storm has obviously spent a lot of time into the songs he's thinking about. Not to mention that most of the concert promoters are generally idiots because they don't usually understand what kind of interpreters would be effective. I know, because I was at lollapalooza two years in a row and i was informed that Lollapalooza was trying to recruit asl students from Columbia College to interpret for Lollapalooza, thinking it could be as simple as that. It's not and this is the point of the ADA complaint, to make sure that people need to understand that there are specific skills required for specific tasks and they also should be responsible/respective to the deaf consumer, now what the interpreter has to say. All in all, drmzz is saying, it's not as easy as we want it to be.
However, from the point of view of iammine, Larger events who are seeking for interpreter services should have been in better contact with the ADA folks or contacted the deaf clients who are paying for the services and inquire about their expectations in the interpreter. I don't believe in drastic requests such as interpreters to be from the touch of god but I believe in reasonable requests such as preferences in interpreters, specific interpretation requests, yada yada yada.
Now, I'm disappointed in both of you even though I don't know you guys very well, I would expect that you guys would quit beating each other up based on how a certain subject can touch a nerve without anyone explaining it. We already have a hard time communicating with the hearing, why beat up the very same person who has the same amount of struggle as you do as a deaf person? We need to quit arguing among ourselves and try to be receptive with other people's opinion without the bashing because hearing people will never take us seriously if we keep up this attitude/behavior.
C'mon Mel, I was just having fun with some word play here. Insult you for what, apart from your naiveness? Crazy Mary is every fan's fav obscure song.
BTW, I don't appreciate you telling deaf people to turn up the volume to enjoy music. Why don't YOU interpret for your friends since you wear C.I., hmm? I notice you
continue to put interpreters in higher standards than deaf people. Naw, it's always about you and Pearl Jam, nothing else matters. Ok, the latter line was a Metallica plug for those who are clueless.
I've been to numerous concerts before and dealt with ADA issues regarding seating and they usually place me and my friends at far right or left or in HC zone from a distance from the stage. Promoters won't give out front seats for reduced price or for free. That's reasonable accommodations for ya. Actually, I don't need interpreters at concerts. I'm there to see the band and enjoy the atmosphere. Been there, done that.
That video link you provided, it's disgusting for terps to stand so far off stage. It's like the blacks being told to sit in far back of bus back then. Like I said, good luck.
drmzz, you are making assumptions again.
I do rely on interpreters to hear the lyrics and CC. And always will.
Deafies do enjoy music by feeling the volume which is of course the vibrations. I love and still rely on vibrations. I still do that without my CI on from time to time, so yeah, I'm sure some would appreciate that.
I'd interpret but I suck at it. I am not as good as you and others. And I do rely on CC and interpreters, as I've said.
More important than deaf people? Hmm...that's your opinion.
Enough of this drama, really, and I am very well aware of the reality but as Jake pointed out, it is not impossible to keep working on it and pushing for our rights to equal accommodation.
And I do agree about the placement of the interpreters in 2006. That was terrible. Thanks to Jake's effort, they placed the interpreters in front of the stage for 2007, but they failed to have designated area for the deafies. Even the interpreters said too bad and refused to relocated to our area where Jacob and I were at because quoting one interpreter, "I can't see Pearl Jam from here! Sorry...it'll be better next year!"
Thanks.
jacob, that's what I'm saying, concert promoters are idiots and they only go for reasonable accommodations. We can only complain and continue to recommend inclusion in planning. I guess denial is high in RnR.
Mel, thanks for sharing this vid. I enjoyed it and I like this guy as well. He may not be everyone's favorite flavor, but I enjoyed his rendition of this song. Thanks for sharing.
Always good to know you're still out there.
Hugs.
~ LaRonda
I loved it! Brian Storm does excellent job with acting and I like the artistic editing! I could feel the rhythm between the lyric and ASL. Good job!
Gary Brooks
garybdir.wordpress.com
Very impressed! A talented interpreter of songs. Great movement, facial expression, perfect classifier, etc. We need more interpreters like him. Thanks for sharing so I can show to my interpreting students.
Bug
Everybody is entitled to terrific interpreters! Especially if they paid a fortune in concert tickets, hotels, and traveling.
On the front stage with me in the front section, too!
I've heard many stories about the interpreters in concerts not being accessible to the deaf patrons or just not doing a good job. I've seen some ASL interpreters in the DC Mall. Some were superb, others ... they didn't do an inspiring job. It's more like an iffy thing. When I go t concerts, I want everything done right. Concert promoters don't always think things like this.
Good luck this August Iammine!
Ha! Cool! I really liked that terp too! Cool song too.
Ya know, I've been to lots of concerts in past and never requested a terp. Just didn't think of it until you mentioned it. It is an interesting concept.
I think that what you're doing is a good thing, and if it's not advocacy, then I don't know what it is!
And I tell people to turn up the AMP! too Lots of deaf people like it - they may hear a bit or feel the vibration!
Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with hmm that dr.'s head. :)
Anyways, thanks for sharing this video with us!
Mel,
thanks for showing the clip. I thought his rendition of Marilyn Monroe before that one was creepy but he is a good song translator/ performer.
I saw that Gnarls Barkley is part of the lineup at Lollapalooza 2008.
I just viewed your ada/lolla complaint youtube video. I was surprised at where you were seated. I guess this is because it is such a big event. But still, you and the interpreters should be moved just close enough to see everything. Who's the contact person for arranging interpreters? Can you talk to someone higher up the ladder to get reassurances for this year's?
This is Lane's BIG brother. That video is better than the real thing. Nice job. Take it easy on my brother, dude.
It's Lane, I'll try to make him vlog himself someday in my place. Later guys.
He is great - but I am sure you understand the hours and hours he must have put into creating that video. Much different than an interpreter working on the fly with a group that has come to town.
I am always amazed watching the interpreters working at the church I visit - to work in two languages in real time.
if you are not
at least stunned
by this interpretation...
i would suggest you have
someone take your pulse.
bravo stormfx - bravo again!
LaRonda - hey, flirty lady! ;) Good to see ya, too! :D
Gary Brooks - I totally agree on how artistic it was and he did a wonderful job on this – all by himself! It’s very nice to be seeing more of musical videos in ASL like D-PAN and on youtube. It is really difficult to do it right in ASL where the deafies can feel the songs through visualization and vibration, but as we can see it can be done!
By the way, Gary, I thought his name was bjorn? It’s Brian?
bug - yeah, very impressed here too! However, make sure to read his disclaimer on youtube in regards to ASL students. But I totally agree that we need more interpreters like that in the Deaf Community - for education, jobs, medical, entertainment, etc... *nods, nods, nods*
MishkaZena - Heck, yeah! I spent a lot of money last year and even explained to lolla TWO months prior to the events…only to be repeatedly ignored by the interpreter coordinators and lolla folks until the very last week following the event. That was only because I got back at them for throwing the “confidential” crap at me when I requested who the interpreters were and wanting to work with them. They’re still doing it now…
And thanks for the good luck this August – I am really curious who the terps are and if things are really improved this year.
Candy - Haha, I used to dance in front of the AMP in bars when I was younger and my hubby even danced with me, don’t know how he could have tolerance for that kind of loudness! People looked at us like we were aliens. :D I guess we were. ;)
todos la vie - Hey, Mary Ruth!
Yes, it was a big event but I brought my issue with them during the weekend and their comment was "everyone has equal opportunity to front row" regardless of the access problems to the interpreters. :P The terps, except for one who was constant, changed their stories of working out the problems for the day of the PJ show with "we are providing access to the crowd, you are not the only one". Right. To the hearing audience.
They are very heavily involved in the Deaf Community in Texas and they know better than to say that – that the deafies need close proximity in order to view the interpreters in clear viewing with less obstructing view. They were very skilled interpreters and quite qualified, but their entitlement attitude... Tsk tsk.
If I couldn’t see them from the crowd, then clearly the other deafies couldn’t either.
Ironically after finding out what agency they hired on my investigation after the event, their agency provides advocacy and workshops to places such as festivals. *shaking head* Their site specifically says "for the deaf and hard of hearing audience". Bwahhahah. And who runs that agency? The very interpreter who refused to relocate to our area because she couldn’t see the band and it was her dream for many years to interpret for Pearl Jam and had "esp" with Eddie Vedder.
And you all think I’m crazy? Hahahahahaha... ;)
Alright, gotta get back to studies...
oops, I meant marilyn manson in my comment. duh me! :-)
Did the venue have a list of who needed to see the terps? If not, then they need to get organized and back themselves up.
Still studying? woo hoo!
Hahaha, MR... actually I did not notice that until you pointed that out!
That's funny...
Actually this is how they operate - you just make requests on what bands that you want to be interpreted by emailing the access department.
That's it. No interaction with the interpreters or anything. It was quite a hassle trying to get the interpreters. They passed on my information to the interpreter coordinators and they just ignored me. Unless I kept on and on...
Even going to the access tent, they just show the list of the bands being interpreted.
They will NOT tell you who the interpreters are or what agency they hired. They even refused to provide me the full names of all interpreters after the event ended when I needed them to file a complaint.
It had come to my attention that the same agency is going to be at lollapalooza again this year.
I wasn't going to name them, but since C3 Presents/Lollapalooza has slapped our faces by showing us respect on hiring the same interpreters again, I am going to post the link to the agency's website:
http://aliveperformance.com/
They just put up a new schedule and lolla is on it, so that's how I knew they are going to be there again.
Despite the DOJ/ADA complaint, filing the complaint with Texas' DARS, Jake also went through various channels in his home state with complaints including Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), and having NAD's lawyer involved, they are still drumming on...
Now, they may be good in their homestate, but it did not happen in Chicago.
I especially find it interesting on reading their bios and what they said contradicts what happened last year - and who they really are, for that matter.
If you look at their concert pictures link - that is giving the impression that the deafies had access to them. NOT!
It, however, illustrates perfectly of who they are - just for themselves.
I do not want them there again this year and I am going to fight that.
If they want to go to lolla, fine...but as FANS. Not as interpreters.
I guess that's how Texas interpreters are? Or am I making a generalization remark?
That's my impression of the Texas Interpreters.
Ah, yes...still studying. 16 credits and internship.
I only got three more courses this fall and I finally get my bachelor's degree! Woot!
