Thank you, Hearing parents who learn ASL
- The sky was the only way
- But it wasn't for me
- I couldn't fly.
- I was born without wings,
- You bent your wings and hid them.
- You crawled with me.
- My knees got dirty,
- You let yours get scrapes.
- Some people got fake wings.
- You didn't believe in that.
- You wanted me to be true.
- You were right.
- I would have torn them off.
- You learned my language before me.
- I became faster, crawled faster.
- You fly, but bend your wings for me.
- I will never fly.
- I never wanted to.
- One day, you watched me
- Stand up, and I walked
- You waited a little more.
- To see me running, and
- Climbing.
- As I climb, I see my view
- And know I've never missed flying.

A wonderful entry. (Inspirational too!)
Wow!!!! If only every parent read and understood that before they try to 'fix' their child!!!
Wow!!! Beautiful!!! Hands waving!! Sounds like a wonderful mother you have!! Can I print this out and post it on a wall at a Deaf residential school where I work (with your name, of course)so the students and staff can read it?
Thanks and keep writing! :-)
Rue, is that you? From AST? :)
Anonymous, I agree with you completely and I do not want to take this for granted. I feel for many other Deaf children who don't have this chance.
Deaf Woman,
Thank you. Sure, please do post this up, only to inspire more Hearing parents and any others.

WOW! fantastic poem, would you mind if I quoted this poem with your name in a college assignment about deaf culture, I work with deaf children and see so many parents unlike yours, this poem says everything about why parents like yours are SO important.
Anon #2, Sure! Please do use this, anything for people to see what you just saw.
Thanks so much :)

Oh yes , you got that right . You betcha, Sojourner :)
I would be very thrilled to see more and more parents learn ASL that is a real communication for these Deaf/Hearing babies/children who deserves this very much.. That's their rightful to have ASL in their lifetime.
Also, it would be a lot of easier for Deaf parents who wants to communicate with Hearing parents with ASL without struggle to each other. No matter how good u can speak that we did the best we could.. It s not always for them to understand us and our deaf voices as I know the truth.
We do not need to have the interpreter to make it a real communication that depends on too much. It s reality that we do not depend on interpreter all the time while we both have a chance with ASL as for a real communication on everything that includes body languages, facial expression, emotion tone and many more that I don't understand how could they turned against ASL. It doesn't make any sense anymore since we have the right to be ourselves as is the real identity of being deaf. No one can hide their own deaf at all that I had to laugh someone tried to pretend they are not deaf as far as many people knew you are deaf.. So be it!
One thing I hate to have a very short conversation to make it simple conversation that is not a great thing to have this kind of communication with hearing people. If you understand what I mean by this. :)
All I can say no one can make me acting out like hearing person.. Scoffs! It does not help me and many Deafies, at all. It s not a must for us to hear and force us to be a hearing person that is NO SUCH THING about a law as well as they lies to many parents who didn't know the truth.. It's very wrongful for someone who doesnt have any faith for Deaf ASLAN people who already showed the fact of their own successful in the past that is sad for many people ignored the truth.
It s not all the parents faults as u know who are the one who brainwashed all of us all along for a very wrong reason.
I am Deaf as I born deaf as is. I do not need to hear any noise pollution that is not taking me anywhere to understand their spoken languages all the time. I find this is real outrageous and selfish thing that some parents refused to learn ASL or accept their child 's being deaf as is.. They are denial their own Deaf children as usual. That s sad, is it?
Thank you for sharing beautiful poem with us. I appreciate this so much. :)
Thank you. :)
