Hey,

I think interpreter can join in Deaf social for ASL only.

Likely as such as Starbuck, Most deaf always go to social and few interpreter show up to chat and keep their ASL skill. I think There is nothing wrong with that.

Of course, each interpreter is welcomed to join any deaf social events. Each interpreter is free to decide to join or not. It's not wise to exclude them as we need them to have excellent ASL. Good ASL comes only from socializing with deaf people. If there is no interpreters at a deaf event, I won't be insulted since they have good reasons not to be there. It's America.

Hi there,

I think it is not Deaf people's job to decide about interpreters' social life.

I believe any interpreter will make their own decision to socialize with Deaf or not. It depends on individual. There are many interpreters whose families (parents or husband or wife or children) are Deaf. So it is very complicated but it is best for interpeters to make their own judgement to get involved or not as long as they understand and know their code of ethics.

It is similar with many Deaf people who work at schools or social services.

It will never be easy. Nobody is perfect.

Greg,

Welcome to the DeafRead! I don't know if you did vlogging before in the past or not.

You brought up the relevant issue about the sticky situation involved terps being socially interacted with other deaf people at deaf social events.

I really do not see anything wrong for terp(s) getting socially involved as all terps or deaf attendees know the unwritten rule for not discussing anything related to interpretering assignments.

Terps have much right to be socially involved at deaf social events. They are the part of our community very much.

Some terps usually join our bi-weekly or monthly deaf events like the DPHH or ASL Dinner. They are also human beings.

I have to look up at the RID handbook whether they formally instruct or discourage terps from socially interacted with deaf people during their own time, etc.

I never forgot one terp made the real scene at the deaf Christmas church dinner like confronting one deaf woman for not paying her interpreting fee, etc.

I had to butt in and told the terp please not to puruse further and discuss with this deaf lady privately or take her to the court with due process, not intimidation in any means.

This terp incident kinda ruined the jovial mood for this deaf Christmas church dinner.

Some terps really do not know better how to behave properly. Same thing with deaf people crossed the line with terps at deaf events like expecting terp to interpret something with hearing people.

Some deaf people do not have any common sense or sense of properity to deal with terps at deaf social events.

I am all for terps being socially involved as they do not impose their own agenda on any deaf people. You know what I meant.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with allowing interpreters to socialize. Excluding interpreters from social events would be just as fair as denying a deaf person an interpreter for medical needs.
