Here are photos of Dr. Robert Davila, current President of Gallaudet University. Apparently he was some kind of trackstar in 1951.
The newspaper clippings are from Gallaudet’s one and only Buff & Blue. Bernard Bragg was the Editor-in-Chief (1951-52). The issue in which the below article and photo appear was Bragg’s first and was published on May 26, 1951.
The writer of the article is Frank Turk, working as sports editor.

Could the photo caption be more fitting? “And Davila Dashes Home…” to Gallaudet. He climbed a long and successful career ladder only to return home as President.

Interesting that they were called the Blues back then. Good write-up by Turk about Davila in a sometimes ho-hum sport. Did Davila make Sportsman or Athlete of the Year that year or any other year?

Goosebumps! Three products from Gallaudet University! One who has become the world’s greatest deaf pantomime. The other who has become the University’s FIRST deaf president! The third who has become the leader of the JrNAD. These three men who have laboured with love endlessly and tirelessly.

I couldnt agree more with your assessment of the photo caption - a perfect fitting! I certainly hope President Davila will read this very blog!

Jean Boutcher, yes! Don’t forget Bernard Bragg is one of the National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) founders. Turk also cofounded Youth Leadership Camp (YLC).
