Four BoT Members, including Ken Levinson, Out.

Ken Levinson was assailed as an audist after he mocked the grammar and derided the mental health status of  a well-respected deaf accountant in an e mail. That e-mail sparked an outrage in the Deaf Community, which still festers to this day.

The other three who have stepped down are Susan Elliot, Frank Ross, and Charles Williams.

These departures leave three BoT vacancies, including a Congressional seat created when McCain resigned to devote on his presidential campaign. With the six vacancies recently filled, a total of nine vacancies out of 19 positions BoT have occurred within a year or so.

The failure of the Bot to remain in contact with the pulse of Gallaudet Community had resulted in the two massive university protests.  The MSCHE blasted BoT for its dereliction of duty. Hopefully, with the total of nine new faces soon occupying BoT, Gallaudet will be free from the plantation mentality ruling the previous BoTs.

The recent selection of the new BoT members are positive. They are purportedly more deaf-centric. I know James Macfadden from GallyNet where he shared his vast business experience and wisdom  and Marlee Matlin from the old days. Dr. Larry Fleischer had provided some valuable assistance to a deaf-centric cause recently. I am not familiar with the other three BoT members, but their resumes look encouraging.  From my talks with the students, staff, and faculty members, the morale on the campus has been high since Davila took over the presidential reign and appointed Weiner as the provost.  With the new administration and a new Bot, Gallaudet will embark on a new and challenging journey into the future. 1. Stephen Hardy Says:

God is good to Deaf people now. We still have two known AUDIST on Board from California and New Jersey who needs to be removed as well.

  2. kevin Says:

Stephen. don’t worry about remaining “audists”. We need a well-balanced BOTs. This is Deafhood.

  3. Responder Says:

    To Mishka Zena,

If my memory serves me correct Senator McCain was quoted as saying he resigned from the BOT because he did not agree with the boards decision in terminating the contract of Dr. Fernandes therefore he could not continue serving on the BOT. I never recall reading he resigned because of his potential presidential bid.

Let’s not make up self serving posts which not true. I respect your opinion’s however this assumption is false and what is more astonishing is you KNOW it.

    PEACE

  4. Concerned Says:

    To Kevin,

I completely agreed with Stephen Hardy’s comment. We need the AUDISTS out completely to perserve the Deafhood! Why do we have to keep the Audists in our Deafhood now these time??? Kevin, pls do clarify for what you mean???

  5. White Ghost Says:

Truthfully, I am glad that Ken Levinson is out! He mentioned and emailed awfully about the deaf financial officer and CEO. He is an oralist and never uses sign language.

I truly think that Ken Levinson is an audist as well.

Dr. Tom “Dumpty Humpty” Humphries….Remember the journalist attempted to interview him about Jane F. and Irving K. Jordan in his office? Boom, he did! The journalist nailed him. LOL!

  6. Brian Riley Says:

    #4,

    To Responder,

There’s nothing wrong with saying McCain resigned to devote himself to his presidential campaign. The key word is “to”, as MZ wrote above, which has a broader use than you are attempting to ascribe.

Obviously, McCain wanted to be President and he saw his membership on the Gallaudet Board as a stumbling block. Of course it was a stumbling block, because he never showed up for a single meeting. The press (or anyone) could ask him why he wasn’t paying attention and why he wasn’t doing the right things at Gallaudet for so many years. So he resigned as a way of copping out and attempting to take attention away from his dereliction of duty.

  7. Richard Roehm Says:

Will the new BOT impress the parents of new babies enough not to implant them?

  8. Mishkazena Says:

Responder, it is MY impression that McCain wanted to pursue his presidential campaign, which will require a lot of free time. Gallaudet was in negative limelight, so naturally he didn’t want his chances for the president affected adversely from his BoT performance, especially when it comes to light that he hadn’t done much, even while Gallaudet was sinking. MSA and PART revealed exactly how bad shape Gallaudet was in prior to the protest.

  9. deafpride Says:

    Richard

Are you saying new BOT trying to prevent parents of new babies not to implant C.I ? It is parents choice for their babies. You support all the kinds of speech, oral, lipreading for deaf kids. what are you trying to tell us?

  10. Raphael J. St. Johns Says:

Giving the quality and (seemingly) non-controversial these new appointments are- I have to respond to Richard Rolm off-the wall statement by re-saying what I said a couple of months ago:

Thank you, Richard Rolm, for taking yourself out of consideration for the BoT. Your nomination would have looked very silly.

  11. DeafSpook Says:

Audism doesn’t mix with Deafhood which itself excludes Audism.

  12. Howard Smith Says:

White Ghost, Ken L. did use sign language but not very fluent as he was a student in LTP program at CSUN!!!!

  13. Responder Says:

    Mishka Zena and Riley,

It is an easy cop-out to say this is YOUR impression that McCain reigned because he was seeking the Republican presidential nomination.

What you have failed to mention is what McCain actually was quoted as saying in relation to HIS reason for resigning. There is no disputing his quoted words. Although you can keep dreaming up scenarios. Facts are facts, not suppositions.

Perhaps if there was less speculation and more positive research on your part you would come across more believable than you actually are.

Anyway, now that you have a board that is to your liking I assume Gallaudet will be turned around to actually be a university, and not a day care center for the culturally deaf! Please give us an estimate when this will happen?

  14. Brian Riley Says:

    #13

For heaven’s sakes, man. How long do you think you can persist in this denial?

No good can come from your futile attempt to breathe political life back into those who are politically dead. (And I’m not speaking of McCain. He’s only a bit player in this drama.)

Out with the old and in with the new.

    Enough.

    PEACE

  15. geez Says:

Richard Roehm - CI is a joke and everyone knows that. Boards already know the CI technology and life’s to move on. Let them be. Many babies are being crucifixed with many false hopes. Look at where you are. You are nobody else.

  16. Still Suffering Oralist Says:

Richard Roehm, you are a BIGGEST JOKE and you did insulted me and you did made fun of my NO GOOD ENGLISH skills! Why did you refuse to help me find a job? You are not neuteral advocate for any of us, suffering Deaf oralists who have NO JOB in the State of California. We are TOTALLY BROKE living with our own welfare SSI income!

  17. Douglas Says:

McCain is not worth to be Prez of America cuz he never show up any meeting of BOTs? Good point?

  18. CyanSquirrel Says:

Brian Riley, are you smoking crack? Your posts are totally out of touch with what Responder has said. I have yet to see you post a single time where you appeared to be even remotely connected to reality. Sorry for the attack, but I’ve about had it with Brian Riley, stemming from the days of the protests where all he did was stir unrest and division instead of promoting respect for both sides, and continuing to today with every time he pipes up without reading and understand what a poster is trying to say. Grr…Stop it! Drama Queen…

I too believe McCain resigned because of his conviction that the ouster of JKF was wrongful, and it is entirely possible another unspoken motive of that is because he wanted to focus on his campaign without the weight of Gallaudet’s crisis on his shoulders. So MZ and Responder may both be right. The only person who can answer that is McCain :-)
