Charity needs £1m

I came across a news artical about Hearing Dogs For Deaf People see this link in The Press.
A CHARITY that trains dogs for deaf people and is celebrating its 25th birthday this year is looking for a big moving away present as it leaves its training centre in Selby district.
Jenny Moir, a spokeswoman for the charity, said she hoped the new training centre would be operational by next summer. “The target for this appeal is a massive £2.5 million, of which we have worked hard to date to raise £1.5 million,” she said.
“We’re now looking for our final £1 million and need your help to raise the funds to build the kennels, training houses, accommodation and offices.”
She said £10 would buy a brick at the Bielby facility, with donors acknowledged in a book of recognition on-site.
As I am Deaf I don’t use Hearing Dog and for years I did not see the point of them till I came across Tina http://funnyoldlife.wordpress.com/
Even her Hearing dog called smudge got a blog http://justsmudge.wordpress.com/
A dog do more than what a flashing door bell can do, etc so pop along and read her blog for more.
By the way if you want to donate click on this link http://www.hearingdogs.org.uk/ look at bottom of page to donate.

Dogs for the blind are awash with funding and the deaf ones aren’t, perhaps people can see the real NEED with the blind and NOT see it with deaf people ? This issue of animals doesn’t engender real debate because animal lovers can’t see any further than those 4 footed hair balls anyway… One thing about flashing door-bells, is that they don’t require feeding or cleaning up after, people want animals for companionship fair enough, but as ‘working dogs’ for the deaf ? c’mon….
There is dog for wheel chair users so they take the washing out of the machine etc so your right its not just for the blind.
But working dogs for the Hearing? cmon.. do you tell the welsh farmers to get up off their fat arses and round the sheep up?
Now you are being silly…. blind people have a proven need for dogs, the otherwise able-bodied deaf don’t. Blind people also get TV allowances deaf don’t too, and who would begrudge them ? Deaf would ?
Not all Blind people use dogs, I have met many of them.
Deaf people have proven they need dogs, no one is begrudging them.
And you know dogs can be dogs so you could not rely on them 100%
What, can a dog do, (Ignoring being a companion), that any deaf alarm couldn’t ? Can deaf NOT manage without them ? at least 49000 or so seem to do OK….. we never managed before dogs ?
“What, can a dog do”
Bark!
nice entry.
Even if I have my reservations about Hearing Dogs, I can say for sure that my mates really appreciate what the Hearing Dogs have done for them etc.
to each his own, I guess
When they can teach fido sign language they might get a point……
You’re barking up the wrong tree, MM. The charity existed for 25 years and it have successfully raised £1.5 mil so far. There is an impressive waiting list for these dogs. Not to be sniffed at.
It is not aimed as a replacement for the usual alerter system but as an alternative. A good alternative too, as you can take it anywhere with you.
You’re missing a major point of having a Hearing Dog, one which I didn’t realise until I got mine. He is a great ice breaker and people now come up and talk to me every day - before I had my dog, no one would talk to me and I was very socially isolated. Having a Hearing Dog has meant I’ve become a totally different person. Before Hearing Dog, I would sit in the corner and hide behind a book, I would never talk to anyone unless I absolutely had to. After Hearing Dog, I am regularly giving lectures to hearing people and working as a careers adviser and trainer. Beat that.
