Traffic Pull-Over Protocol: How To Stay Safe
Bahl got pulled over, ended up getting beaten up, and thrown in jail. He got charged for obstruction and was rendered guilty as charged. How should we do to avoid all that when you're pulled over by a cop?

I agree with you 100%, and one thing I would like to add, never touch police officer.
Edward Nugent,
Thanks for the important tip - never touch an officer! Absolutely.
Hi Cy,
Good vlog on this topic.
I wonder if you feel that you have been mistreated by a police officer (of course, we must try to maintain our composure and copy the police officer badge) but where do we go and complain? Do we go to the nearest police station or contact the chief or what?
Recently I was stopped by a police officer, he pulled me over. I waited until he walked to my window and I then gestured that I was deaf and I needed written communication. The police nodded and went to his motorcycle and got a pad/pen and communicated with me. He was very nice and patient. I didn't feel nervous or anything and I could ask him questions. I wish there were more police officers like him. He did great! I wish I could give him compliments on how he handled it well but I didn't get his badge number. Oh well.
Have coupons for donuts in your glove compartment ready. I haven't try it yet. JK.
Seriously, good video....CY.
I do not remember if my driver's ed class teacher or our classbook talked about it.
Agree with you 100 percent!!! I am that calm when I am pull-over by police too. I have always thought we should be calm and wait for police. I live in Alaska where most people likely to own a gun in their house so when being pull-over by police I try to be careful not to make police suspect I have gun. But all of my pull- over or accidents I don't think I have met a police who don't understand when I said I am deaf. One time I was pull-over for speeding and police was nice to give me a warning but he wrote on paper with blue pen wrote in big letter said "SLOW DOWN!!!!!" haha.
Michelle,
Good point about to whom to report when you experience unpleasantries or inappropriate conduct by a cop. Make sure you get the name and the time it took place and where. Give information to the police sergeant or chief at the local station. Make sure you know which town the cop works for - I think it is helpful if you call stations first to find out which station the cop works for. My town has several stations. When you find the right station, then ask whom this cop reports to and communicate to his superior what transpired between you two. Give detailed information as possible.
Keep in mind this may give a bitter pill to the cop you reported upon and he might treat the next deaf person even worse so it should be for a valid reason to report him - not just for a trivial reason.
Badge number, for me, is hard to memorize, so I tend to look at their name tags which are usually pinned to their shirts.
Nightowl,
Good idea to keep current coupons for donuts! Great tip! wink

Lord, it sure makes cops nervous to approach vehicles in states where hunting is part of the culture and the norm to carry rifles in vehicles. Yeah, it would be essential for the drivers to be calm because weapons in vehicle would make any cop jittery! I can imagine many rural cops encounter these situations where drivers keep hunting rifle racks on the back windows.
Your topic is very positive!
I'm so pleased.
Few times, I was stopped, I was being polite...and I did say that
I'm sorry for some thing...they let me go without getting a ticket.
I agree! Also, we all have to remember that the police job is a very highly stressful job. The cops are always on their toes and be alert at all times for any possible dangers. So sometimes some of them have bad days or rough days and they unintendically take it out on others by overreacting or whatnot. However, most of them are professional and treat citizens with respect. I agree with you that in order of us to do well in communicating with the cops is to follow their instructions and keeping your hands on the steering wheel and so on. :0)
I would like to add a comment to your blogpost. Some people impersonate as police. Should it ever happen to you, numero uno would be to notify at the police station that you were pulled over by a police who did NOT have his cap on and whose badge number was invisible. If possible, copy the number of the impersonator's
number on the patrol car.
Also, never pay in cash if the
police (impersonator) demands you to do so on the highway.
You forgot turn on emerg lights. What do you know of case what happened you do not know. NG talk. Police or him overeacted who knows. If newspaper provide extra details fine know for sure.
Deaf Caution had J88 cards for protection.
CY you are right that I did follow cops what i was told by cops that isnot any problem with us. i told cops that i am deaf but be careful if i am telling them truth that i am deaf so i used my voice not normal to let them know that i am truth as deaf so cops would realize that i am deaf. so i love cops lol
The police officers are nice but they are still encounters to me like UFO or monsters. No wonder, drivers don't like the cops coming nearby or giving tickets. I know the drivers or regular people wish the cops out of their way all the times.
Glad you come back on vlogs again...
Yes, I agree with you 100 percent.
it was very good tips...

Once the cop stopped me for don't stop completed at Stop singal. He walked up toward to my window. I tried to gesture him that I am deaf. He suddenly started attitude toward but I just kept calm down myself. He didn't cooperate that's what did I request for pen and paper. I struggled to understand what did he say. I assumed he asked for my driver license and register. I can tell that he had bad mood that day. He gave me a ticket without say why did he stop me. Few hours later I decided to sign on plead not quilty on the ticket and mail it. few weeks, I went to the court and I explained it to the judege and I got my case dismissed for cop attitude plus didn't say why did he stop me for. Cop got mad and left the court. I just keep calm myself.
Yes, I agree with you 100 percent.
it was very good tips.......

You did everything right. You did not make the cop more angry by keeping calm even if he seemed to be in a bad mood and had a lousy attitude. You let him give you a ticket without arguing or giving him attitude. You let the judge take care of it and hopefully the cop learned a lesson.
Maybe another tip would be to flash your hazardous lights while driving to a populated place such a gas station. This is usually suggested as a way to shake off impersonators.
This would be helpful for nights, too, when you need more lights.
As a Legal Advocate/Advisor/Paralegal for the deaf, I do not understand WHY you got BEAT UP, THROWN INTO JAIL for obstruction? What were the cop's understanding and yours? Two different cultures clashed and just because the cop has a badge does'nt mean he can do whatever he wants and charge you with obstruction.....if that cop himself does'nt understand.....just because a deaf person tends to get nervous and uses body language, that the cop perceives as a threat to himself, doesn't give the cop the right to charge you with stuff you didn't do...cops assume too much...just with a spanish speaking person, most cops will radio for a "spanish speaking" cop for assistance, and they need to radio for a cop that knows sign language, and not assume they know what you are saying by facial gestures, which they can mistake for your being rude.....how dumb they can be...someone once said...."Assumption is the "mother" of all F***-ups"
