Yes, deaf can be a race driver. there is a deaf lady which i can't even remember her name. she was a famous race driver at the small race track back in 70's . my brother own a create race motor business and also race driver. he did once ask me to join no matter if i am deaf or not. it is very easy to follow the instruction. just watch the flag color and you will know what happen. it is impossible for anyone who can hear with a loud sound at the small race track unless at nascar race then that a different story but again, deaf can drive a race car at least if you go to school or play small race track and there will be someone who to watch and they will choose who to join a nascar race in the future.
Yes - there is a professional deaf race driver named Greg Gunderson. You may check him out at www.gundersonracing.com Good luck in your future adventures.
Respond to first comment- Yes, she is Kitty O'Neil, right? I have heard about her before.. And, I am curious about your brother, what kind motorsports does he race? Email me or comment me back here.
Respond to second/third comment- Oh, yes, One of my friend does research on this man, Greg Gunderson, for our teacher. He tell me about him a lot. Thanks for mentions these. =D
Nothing is impossible, it doesn't stop you. I think one of the obstacles is the insurance. Some races allow a Deaf racer, some don't. If you know how to hurl the obstacles,(with your speed motor, wink) way to go to grab the black and white checker flag.
Yes. Racing is an expensive sport. If you can obtain investors or sponsors, it's doable I suppose. It's a very consuming biz to be in, physically and psychologically.
Yes, I believe deaf folks can get into racing safely. Just those who have to stop at the end of every lap to ask for directions should not. Lol....J/K DT
interesting topic... i wonder how hearie racers communicated before technology age. using flags or gestures? or sign boards?... speed speaking, it was much slower then. they could see them. but todays speeding, it might be way too fast to notice them... hopefully in near future, deaf have more advantage in communication technology... you are realistic about dangers of motor racing and needs of developing good race driving skills... you dont just go in a car and race it... can deafies race? sure... why not? by the way i enjoyed this vlog. h...h... h... i... i...j... j...
Yes! you can! I had been in automotive industry for more than 30 years, there got quite several deaf racers out there, like professional drag racer Travis Matthis, quite few sprint car racers like Eric Wray, or Greg Gunderson, professional kart racer Wesley Peacock, I can quite names few more and you even can buy a race car or motorcycle and try out in your local tracks, like I did in 1978 I won a race at ACE speedway I used five different color lights on my dashboard to help me manevering through the race, There got plenty oppty's to be as for NASCAR, if u got lot of money just go to NASCAR driving school to get license and buy two different built cars one is "long track" built car and "short track" cars like "COT" and hires the crews so Anything in automotive industry are quite challenge but there are no such thing to say impossible. so wish you best! way to go!
We've got a great deaf racer here in the Tampa Bay area. His name is Scotty Williams and he runs at our local dirt track, East Bay Raceway Park. He's been racing (and winning) for many years and he can tell his crew what is going on with his car better than most hearing persons can. (He can feel what's happening, as opposed to trying to pick out subtle changes in his engine noise, over the roar of a bunch of cars around him.)
You can do anything you set your mind to and don't let anyone tell you that you can't. Reach for your dreams.
I know one man did race dirt track in late 40's and early 50's. He won many race, when insurance found out he is deaf and inform hearing owner of race car that deaf driver can not race and will not cover so deaf man left. That happen in Mississippi many years ago but now any deaf can race. I used to race karting for few months, then I quit for two reason, to many classes (13 different classes) and long long hours for a short race plus costly. My class (group) is Senior Super Stock- most popular karting. Deaf can do it if skill and money are in your heart then go for it.
