Dear Campus Community,
I am aware that there has been much concern–and speculation–about
changes in the administration of Academic Affairs. Therefore, I would
like to take this opportunity to explain to you what is happening.
First, I want to thank Dr. Thomas Allen, Dr. Karen Kimmel, Mr. Carl
Pramuk, Ms. Deborah DeStefano, and Mr. James DeStefano for their many
years of dedicated service to Gallaudet. They have worked long and hard
to make Gallaudet a better institution, and I know I speak for the whole
community when I say we are forever grateful for all they have done.
These talented individuals will continue to share their expertise with
the University by taking on new responsibilities, which are currently
being determined.
Next, I want to explain the reorganization of Academic Affairs, which
will take effect on July 1. The purpose of this reorganization is
twofold: First, it will make better use of our resources to win
re-accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education
(MSCHE). Second, it will strategically position us to better meet the
challenges of a changing student population and the new demands placed
on our graduates.
My office will include directors for Institutional Research and
Assessment, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Engagement,
and the coordinating team for MSCHE. There will be a new dean for the
College of Professional Programs and Outreach. Reporting to this dean
will be the director of Outreach, the Gallaudet Leadership Institute,
and the Center for ASL/English Bilingual Education Research (CAEBER).
Also, there will be a new dean for Enrollment Management who will be
responsible for oversight of our enrollment and retention programs, the
Admissions Office, the Financial Aid Office, and the Registrar’s
Office.
As for the rest of the units, there will be a new associate dean of the
Center for Academic Programs and Student Services (CAPSS), the librarian
will report to the dean of the Graduate School, and a new Office of
Commuter Affairs will report to the executive director of Student
Affairs. Other units will report as they do now, including the dean of
the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (Clerc Center).
I have asked the following people to serve on a two-year basis:
Dr. Carol Erting, as interim dean of the Graduate School and
Professional Programs;
Dr. Isaac Agboola, as interim dean of the College for Liberal Arts,
Sciences and Technologies;
Dr. Joseph Innes, as interim dean of CAPSS; and
Dr. Catherine Andersen, as interim dean for Enrollment Management
In addition, Mr. Edgar Palmer has been named associate dean for the
Center for Academic Programs and Student Services, and Mr. Dwight
Benedict as executive director of the Office of Student Affairs. These
six individuals, together with Dr. Cynthia King, executive director of
Academic Technology, and Dr. Katherine Jankowski, Dean of the Clerc
Center, will serve on the Academic Affairs Management Team.
In my office, Dr. David Pancost will serve as faculty fellow, with the
responsibility and oversight for operations of various activities
attached to my office, especially MSCHE re-accreditation. Dr. Thomas
Kluwin will serve as director of the Office of Institutional Research
and Ms. Eileen Matthews will serve as director of assessment. Ms. Judy
Berglund will continue to provide support.
I am creating a new Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student
Engagement, and I will have a search conducted to hire the new director.
On the MSCHE coordinating team will be Dr. Kluwin, Ms. Eileen Matthews,
Dr. Andersen, Mr. ‘Bunmi Aina, Dr. David Armstrong, and the chairs of
the Council on Undergraduate Education and the Council on Graduate
Education (currently Ms. Kathryn Baldridge and Dr. H-Dirksen Bauman,
respectively).
I am also considering a recommendation to create a College of General
Studies, which would include all current support services now in CAPSS
and the Honors Program, plus responsibility for all general education
programs. After due review, I expect to create such a college by August
31 of this year.
I realize these changes are quite extensive, but I truly believe they
will lead to a stronger University and help Gallaudet retain its
position in the forefront of education and empowerment for deaf and hard
of hearing people. As always, I appreciate your continued support during
this important time of reorganization.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephen Weiner

FYI Thomas Allen is not demoted he transfer to other department because it was his goal to work at that department.
June 15th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
I still think the DeStefano should be fired.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Who will be the skipper of the BOT? The whole thing rides a lot on who the skipper is.
Who is going to be the next skipper?
June 15th, 2007 at 9:03 pm
how about what to do with about one third of existing students at Gally who can not read and can not write? why let them stay and graduate?
also how about restoring the college preparatory dept. that would benefit those students?????
June 15th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
DCABlogs
it was said that the list was the people who were demoted or transferred
June 16th, 2007 at 12:01 am
Richard, we don’t even know for sure if the chairperson of BoT is leaving yet as there is no official confirmation on this yet.
Bringing back the Prep School is a very good idea. Gallaudet should explore this seriously
June 16th, 2007 at 12:13 am
It is VERY DISGUSTING to know that they have decided not to fire Jim and Deborah DeStefano. How can they still keep them around if they changed the grades for some students? We feel so bad for some people who got fired for very minor reason comparing to theirs.
Again, Jim and Deborah should be FIRED !!
June 16th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Delanne yes but I spoke with someone at gallaudet staff they said no Tom Allen wanted to moved to other department he was already planned to leave his current position because he is interesting in work for other kind of research department.. So technically he wasnt demoted because he was planned to transfer himself…
June 16th, 2007 at 8:10 am
Sorry I overlook the word transfer… Sorry forgive me my mistake…
June 16th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
We witnessed some people violating policies egregiously during their work hours harming Gallaudet tremendously and getting it in serious trouble with MSCHE, PART, and CAC. These employees aren’t fired.
Yet Slemo was fired for participating in something during his free hours. Perhaps there was some justification there… perhaps not as we don’t have all the information connected with his termination.
I just wish I could make some sense why one was terminated while everybody else are still employed. Many people are also wondering the same thing.
June 17th, 2007 at 5:38 am
It is very sadly for Slemo, however he should have not be done for what he did.
My understanding that Debby Destefano is transfering to MSSD as Outreach, but I could be wrong! I wonder what will happen to Jimmy Destefano and Carl Pramuk??? Are they still working at Gallaudet as what kind of position???
I also understand that Karen Kimmel is on Sabbactical Leave now until January 2008, but I am not sure! If it is true that she is on SL, and what should she do on SL? What is she doing during SL?
I am very disappointed with interim Dr. Moore because he did make announcement that Gallaudet Athletic is on probation for CAC for two years and took two titles of 2005 and 2006 and plus Coach of the Year from Lynn Ryan Loren from Volleyball team of Gallaudet (all of those awards are taking back to CAC)… WHY???? Volleyball players did work very hard for nothing???? I think it is really ridicilous for what Dr. Moore’s decision! He could not do that! Volleyball players were working very hard and got two titles of 2005 and 2006 and now they are gone!!!! I disagreed with Dr. Mike Moore.. and I dont support with Dr. Mike Moore’s decision at all.. Volleyball players and Head Coach Lynn Ryan Loren are innocent… What did VB players and Head Coach to do in the past???
What do you think and what is your opinion?
June 17th, 2007 at 5:42 am
response to Pamela (#6)
Yes, I support you…. about Preparatory program should be back to Gallaudet program again!!!! It is very good idea, OF COURSE!!! It will helpful with number of enrollment for Gallaudet’s future.
June 17th, 2007 at 8:31 am
There were offenses conducted by other employees that I personally think were very egregious. From what I’ve heard KK did the grade fixing and Paul Kelly allegedly ordered DPS and PPDs to do whatever they can to disperse the protesters away from Brentwood Gate, resulting in physical attacks both breaking laws. These DPSs and PPDs were never held accountable for their felonies assaults. One was ‘caught’ redhanded for letting an ineligible player participate. Yet they all are still employed at Gallaudet. So the question is: Exactly what did Slemo did that was so bad and got him fired?
I assume that CAC ordered these championships be stripped and that Dr Moore was only following their instructions. That would be the standard procedure. Yes, that is not fair for the vb team players and the coach. However, it would be more unfair for the teams in other universities who followed NCAA policies and played clean if an university cheated and won the awards illegally. So, yes, a lot of people were hurt by this cheating. That’s the consequences when the A.D. cheated. The A.D and whoever else involved in this unethical procedure are to be blamed, not CAC nor Moore.
June 17th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
Surely Slemo must have been told the exact reason why he was fired, yet Slemo chooses to be vague and tell his friends that it was due to his “involvement” with GallyNet.
You should ask Slemo the exact reason why he was fired and also ask him why he is not telling us the exact reason.
June 17th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Other sources told me that Slemo was fired solely for his involvement with GallyNet.
June 17th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
No, that’s too vague. “Involvement” is not a legal term that carries any meaning. There has to be a specific legal reason why he was fired, otherwise he could win a multi-million-dollar judgment against Gallaudet.
Click on my name (above) to see how my e-mail inbox looked on April 14. It was a post on Gallynet-L containing the entire contents of the Supplemental Report to the Middle States Commission. No corporation that is operated with any kind of sane management system would allow such kinds of documents to be released by employees without permission to do so.
By releasing the report, Slemo was violating Gallaudet University’s rights. A corporation has a right to decide what information to release, and when it will release it, and under what circumstances. Slemo cannot claim that he has the “free speech right” to violate other people’s rights or a corporation’s rights. This is basic stuff learned by first-year law students.
During the protest maybe it made sense to release some internal documents of Gallaudet, because doing so would be a type of civil disobedience. Whichever Gallaudet employee released such documents would have to be willing to be fired as a possible result.
But there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to release that Supplemental Report to the Middle States Commission to the public without authorization. For Slemo to do that is the equivalent of telling the world that he, Slemo Warigon, is the President of Gallaudet.
June 18th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
OT: Do you know what’s happening with SW/MSW Dept at Gallaudet? A friend of mine got in but told it was in shambles due to the director’s resignation (Dr. Jane Pray?)???
June 18th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
Have you gleaned all facts from the Office of
President and the Office of Public Relations
as to why Slemo Warigon was fired for his
involvement in GallyNet while a number of
Gallaudet faculty members have NOT been
fired for their involvment of the said list?
June 21st, 2007 at 3:00 pm
I just learned that MSCHE workgroup from Gallaudet website.. I recognized that those people who were involved with six different workgroups of MSCHE, were not UPDATING! Because I could see there were lots of change names of people from six workgroups.. For an example: Debby Destefano, one of her name still there, is she still involved with MSCHE workgroup??? I could see the date were still old, and they should need updating if there any change, then they should keep update from website, too.. DO you agree??? Because Stephen Weiner wrote a letter who are responsibility for the position, blah blah… but on website did not change yet…
you can go look at it : http://www.gallaudet.edu/x171.xml There is on the left box and there are six different workgroup of MSCHE… there are names of ppl who are involved with … you can see the date on the top… and has not updated yet.
