Today, President Davila officially named Dr. Stephen Weiner as the new Provost of Gallaudet University.
While the President may be the public face of Gallaudet, the Provost will be the architect and driver of neccessarily sweeping internal changes over the next few years. At least, I hope — and so do many other people — that the changes to come are sweeping. Not to belabor my previous points, but academic and admissions standards do not fix themselves. Neither do retention and graduation rates. Budgets do not grow magically. It’ll take a real Provost to make students realize they shouldn’t be out drinking with me during finals week.
I wish Dr. Weiner the best of luck in his upcoming years as Provost. A lot needs to be done to pull Gallaudet out of the rut it sits in now… it is imperative that he acts accordingly. We’ll all be watching.
If a refresher is needed on this series, check out my previous posts on the finalists for the Provost position: William Marshall, Joseph Innes and Stephen Weiner.

What business does a RIT student have to do in commentary about Gallaudetized matters? At least that Innes-loser isn’t Provost but we can do better than this Weiner.
Perhaps it is BECAUSE he is an RIT student that makes Josh Allman capable of providing that outside perspective that allows him to report on this subject without the internal influence that an insider from Gallaudet might - intentionally or otherwise - bring to any such writing.
After all, your comments regarding “that Innes-loser and this Weiner” hardly appear to qualify you as a neutral objective correspondent on the subject.
I confess to being surprised that someone from RIT was chosen to do this series (but then again, DeafDC is almost wholly comprised of RIT folks), but that shouldn’t qualify or disqualify someone from reporting. I think Josh did a good job from where I stand.
Logical reasoning at Gallaudet:
Only Gallaudet students or alumni can blog about Gallaudet. Josh Allmann is not a Gallaudet student or alumni. Therefore, Josh Allmann cannot blog about Gallaudet.
One other thing…”almost wholly” is not 36.84%
And, the word, “Gallaudetized” is rather offensive as Gallaudet should be open to the community outside the campus.
That’s the problem with Gallaudet. I see Gallaudet as a gigantic everlasting bubble that has yet to pop.
So, I applaud Mr. Allman’s for reporting on such news regarding Gallaudet.
Think about it: Why do we have Media out there these days? Does that mean ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX News/ CNN and many alternative media have no business in reporting the news out there when one may have no significant ties to such events that may occur?
I don’t think so.
Wake-up!
I looked at the list of the bloggers, and it seems to me (could be wrong here) that 1/3 are Gallaudet alumni or students, 1/3 are RIT alumni or students, and the last 1/3 are from other places.
In defense of Josh Allman. I chatted with Josh at the NAD’s Open House few weeks ago. I found him incredibly intelligent and observable.
Josh Allman is definitely a DEAF person himself. I somewhat get the same feelings about too many RIT people work at Gallaudet University lately or somewhat meddles in Gallaudet affaris since the “UFG” protest.
We sometimes really need an outsider to report something on Gally campus without feeling any attachment to particular individuals working or studying at Gallaudet University.
I felt little insulted about Josh’s use of blog title like “Always the Bridemaid, Never the Bride” to write about the beloved Dr. Steve Weiner. At least, we had to embrace the black humor from time to time.
We, Gallaudetians have to keep the close eyes on RIT/NTID people what they are really up to. My understanding about RIT/NTID people being outspoken and deeply concerned about the Gallaudet community and the rest of deaf community at large.
Gallaudet, RIT/NTID, CSUN and the rest of deaf educational facilities of the deaf ought to work together for the best interests of Deaf Education.
That would be really nice for Dr. Jay Innes to be hired as the “Deaf Education” Czar at the U.S. Department of Education. We really need the “Deaf Education” Czar in the federal government in response to the unnacceptable state of the Deaf Education in America.

Ah! I would rather have JKF as the Education Czar. She is MUCH MORE qualified than anyone can think of including that Innes fella.
As for Josh being an RIT/NTID student. Who the hell cares! He blogs what he thinks, he’s deaf, he’s smart and he can sure as hell write. So what’s the problem?
Hearty Congratulations to Dr Weiner! I’m proud of him! :-)
Vikee,
With due respect, Dr. Jay Innes have been greatly involved in the Deaf Education issues for many years. He is on the NAD’s “Deaf Education” committee.
What have JKF (Jane Fernandes) done so far which she never bother to be involved in any deaf advocacy organizations. She ever neither became a member of any deaf organizations like the NAD.
Have Jane Fernandes interacted with any of us, deaf fellows in the past and lately? Nope! We need someone, who have the pulse of the community and hobnobble with people in general.
Tony Blair definitely changed the stotic Great Britian into the hippish and lively British from his leadership willingly to buck the so-called traditions and precedents. Blair kinda save the English monarachy from herself during the Princess Diane’s unexpectational death.
