Dear Campus Community: It is my great pleasure to announce the selection of Dr. Stephen Weiner as provost of Gallaudet University.Dr. Weiner brings a wealth of experience to this position from his 22-year career at the University. Most recently, he has been an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies. Prior to this, he served as dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies, which he established. He also formed the Association Leadership Training Program as part of the Gallaudet Leadership Institute, and was instrumental in developing the Student Tracking and Retention System (STARS) for first-year students. The leadership Dr. Weiner has demonstrated in a wide variety of programs will be invaluable to me and the entire Gallaudet community as we rise to answer the call of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) during our re-accreditation process. To borrow the words of the MSCHE visiting team, now, as always, Gallaudet is defined by the strength and determination of its people. Pointing to the considerable talents of the Gallaudet community, the team said it feels that the University is capable of demonstrating full compliance with the Middle States’ standards. I am confident that Dr. Weiner can help lead us through this challenging time.I wish to thank the Provost Search Committee, chaired by Ann Powell, for all of its hard work, and commend the other finalists in the search, Dr. William Marshall and Dr. Joseph Innes. We will need their expertise, and of yours, as well, as we work together with our new provost.Sincerely,Bob Davila

Weiner’s background: Stephen Weiner is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Gallaudet University. His previous administrative roles at Gallaudet include Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies (1995-2001), Executive Director, Student Development (1993-94) and Director of the Career Center (1990-1993). Both his B.A. and M.A. are from Gallaudet and he earned his Ed.D. in Counseling and Development from American University. http://news.gallaudet.edu/?ID=8547
Commentary: I remember Steve Weiner from college days. His easy going, laid back personality makes him a popular person among the faculty and students. His ability to work with many different groups will be a great asset for his provost position. His professional experiences at Gallaudet makes him well qualified to work as a Provost. During this critical period while Gallaudet works hard to achieve the improvements requested by both MSCHE and PART of Dept of Education, teamwork is of essence. Weiner had proved himself as a valuable team player many times. Congratulations, Dr. Weiner
When I checked the FSSA Website yesterday, it was closed. http://www.gufssa.com/
Today, according to an unverified source, FSSA will be unofficially disbanded immediately after Davila’s announcement of the appointed person for the Provost position. The unused portion of the monies raised during the protest will be used for scholarships. However, this hasn’t been verified yet.  MZ
Update: From a very highly credible source: “FSSA hasn’t been disbanded. We voted to continue fssa and will meet again to discuss the infrastructure… How it will operate, etc.” MZ

That was what I initially thought because gufssa.com says “Thanks for Visiting Us”. I am grateful that it is not permanently shut down.

Congrats to Dr. Stephen Weiner! I am confident he will make great things happen at our beloved Gallaudet.

mmm. I was kind of hoping for Gallaudet to choose someone from outside so old ideas would not get recycled. This fellow has been Gallaudetized so to speak.
However he is now the new emperor - see how his reign goes. He has my benefit of doubt for now.

I met him last October even though I don’t remember much of him as a student. H seemed like a very confident person who knows what his goals are. I wish him the best with his new position as provost. He has such a good rapport with the community from what I have heard and seen of him.
