Yeah, I do agreed what u’re talkin’ about the ASL skill level for Gally’s staffs, professors, etc. Myself, I was a former Gally student for 1 years before I withdrew from this university. When I was enrollment to Gally, I thought that all of staffs, professors, etc… will use very poweful or very good at ASL skills because of Gally is the only one Deaf university in the world. I was in the class… I couldn’t even understand some of professors what they’re talkin’ about? I was sayin’ like WTF?!? (excuse my language) I really don’t understand why they’re still hiring them and keep them stay work at Gally campus for many years. Damn. But I still do cares about Gally, of course!
I am not surprised because it has similar problems in public school. School board of education does not required good ASL teachers for classes that most children are crucial learning from K-12. We need to do something about it soon as possible.
How will you enact the ASL policy at Gallaudet University? Whose intermediatary you will appeal to? GUAA? How?? When??
Gally students have been shortchanged in many ways by the inept ASL signers at Gallaudet University.
I always have been frustrated with handful of Gally professors for their poor receptive skills for ASL during my studies. I had to repeat myself several times or go write on the blackboard.

Gallaudet shows a schizoid approach to ASL. They constantly proclaim that ASL is embraced and practiced on campus. Yet, in person, we see little evidence of that. Their ASL policy is totally inaccurate as it claims that ASL is SimCom.
I recall watching vlog conference and this chairperson scoffed and mocked, “What is ASL centered?” to an audience question. That’s the attitude on campus. I agree with mishkazena, the policy consider ASL as SimCom and that is the biggest disservice of all. ASL continues to be abused and disrespected. Methods of communication are important over ASL since students came from schools with that experience. ASL should lead them to the truth. I agree that policy needs to be changed in writing and too bad, haven’t seen that happen yet.
Come on, Gallaudet!
We need ASL Policy to help my Deaf son to improve his own writing skills! I got tired of waiting for too long! ASL is primary language!
When??
Very interesting.
One thing is I want to say, IF I WERE a GALLAUDET student, my teacher or instructor’s ASL skills is so-so or not enough skilled, I would file a COMPLAINT against GALLAUDET that I am NOT happy or satisfied with teacher’s ASL skills due having a hard time to understand, it would waste my money to cover my tutition, I do not want to waste my time!
Example for as an interpreter –she or he is not skilled with ASL, I would not accept that till I find a skilled and best qualified interpreter then I will be very happy and satifisted then it would worth my time to learn in the class! So that should be same thing with teachers to improve their skills with ASL
It sound like NO ONE complaint for unskilled ASL teachers at Gallaudet, PLUS you even had to go through “so-so” with ASL -teacher, you accepted that.
I were in your shoe, I would withdraw that class, then I will report that board of director immediately about that case which it need to establish a strong ASL policy for all teachers must pass ASL test!
Wow.. since I thought all teachers were very good with ASL skills to work with all students to learn any subjects in the class at Gallaudet, But I realized that I was wrong. Bit disappointment.
Yeah yeah, for DPS on campus must have ASL in sign language so they can communicate easy with Deaf people. I am concerned with DPS. Because I was hassled by loss prevention agents in my work (macy’s) for longer. They don’t understand my deafness. I am not standard with hearing environment. I usually socialize with Deaf in my all life.
On Moe’s comment…it goes the same for me and I was like UGH…is that really Gallaudet? It’s not how I picture Gallaudet. I stayed there for a year and left there because I felt that it did not benefit me any.
