Oregon School for the Deaf supporters rally at Capitol
February 13, 2007
Students and teachers of the Oregon School for the Deaf handed out flowers and valentines to state legislators Tuesday afternoon to garner support for the school.
Three middle school students passed out carnations to state legislators with teacher Kris Hurst.
Later, adults from the Oregon Deaf Coalition, including OSD teachers, handed out flowers to lawmakers’ offices.
Coalition member and parent Robyn Brown said the group hopes to push for legislation that would create an independent school district for the School for the Deaf. The coalition was created after the dismissal of former director Jane Mulholland in late December.
“We just want to tell them happy Valentine’s Day,” said Kathy Connor, an OSD teacher. “We want them to be able to remember us.”
