You asked for his reply and didnt you hear back from Dr Davilla??
Also, why did you guys prefer Dr Davilla over JFK? I think JFK signs way better than Dr Davilla. Dr Davilla signs very ENGLISH...very few ASL signs. JFK not enough deaf?? I think Dr Davilla is NOT ENOUGH deaf!
Yes, I can understand MSA's point that a protest slows down or can even stop the freedom of intellectual mingle at a university, but where there has been an intellect favored over another and where that intellect is provided with resources and funds, there is a possibility that the opposite intellect's efforts, contribution and development had been hampered, oppressed or marginalized without a place to voice anything. That's an act of violence too.
I say this because a university holding back on scholarships, research and development on indigenous languages, communities and culture is a terrible sin. A university slowing down and preventing a group of people with culture and tradition to grow into a self reliant community is not a collective university or a university at all.
The students in the protest last October did not stand up and complain about some differences, they had stood up for a valid cause. The threat on ASL Deaf community at Gallaudet is real.
Finally I am thinking that Gallaudet had not better be thinking that the ASL Deaf community should aim to set aside ASL and Deaf culture in order to better integrate into the larger community (the hearing society). I wonder is Gallaudet is going to favor audio technology (CI, Hearing Aids and all that) over visual technology?
I think that MSA, indeed, does recognise the students's and the faculty's right to freedom of speech. I think that what MSA really means is that protesters could walk out to demonstrate around the campus with a sign, say, "Resign, Fernandes" without locking all classrooms. For example, American University students demonstrated on Massachusetts Avenue (the Embassy Row), with a sign, "Resign, Ladner,"
without locking gates or classrooms. Their protest was well heard. Refusing to show up in the classroom is better than locking classrooms. See la différence. I think that MSA would not have lashed out at protesters if not locking the gates and classrooms.
You guys missed your opportunity to make it clear to the MSA that expressions of opinions and ideas were already shut down by the Jordan administration.
The protest was an act of fighting against oppression of opinions and ideas. Therefore, the MSA's attack on the protest itself is an act of violence.
Of course, the MSA is a hearing organization. Hearing people will always be the same. Fuck em.
The shutdown of entire Gallaudet campus was not really an act of violence. The protestors done the shutdown as a last resort after months and years of communication shuffles within the university adminstration. Whose fault?
Provost Jane Fernandes seized the Tower Clock 2000 yearbooks as a real act of violence against the academic freedom for the exchange of ideas and expressions.
Snubbed the years of growing concerns and demands about the necessity of formal recognization of the American Sign Language (ASL) at Gallaudet University. The real failure of Gallaudet University in the 90s and 2000s for accomodating the students with their native language use - American Sign Language (ASL) in classrooms and lecture forums was definitely seen as an act of violence!
So that means DPN in 1988 is considered act of violence too? I know we, people who involved the protest actually saved Gallaudet University. IKJ and his people better start to worry if MSA decides to remove Gallaudet University from membership as an accredited institution because they will face countless lawsuits if Gallaudet University loses its accreditation. However, I personally have a feeling that Gallaudet University will not lose its accreditation. I will continue this discussion in my video under www.savegallaudet.org next week. Ryan, glad to see you again and keep vlogging! - Ron -
Speaking of the 1988 DPN...The gates were locked...all classes were closed...even administrator Ingold was locked out! MSA still reaffirmed Gally in 1990's. Why criticize now? I'll first ask SBG presidents of other universities...
wait and see...
Good point? I would feel the same way if I were you. Your thought really is clearly. It would not have happened in the first place if IKJ, Bot, DPS, ADM, others had listened to the protesters, wish MSA also considers them as an act of violence.

The protesters did the proper thing by fighting for justice. Jordan and Fernandes were in the process of destroying the foundations of Gallaudet. The protesters saved the university, and therefore saved the ability of people to attend the university and participate in the openness and communication.
Remember that fraud is a form of indirect violence, and Jordan was perpetuating a fraud against the Gallaudet community, the deaf community and the American People.
The protesters were performing *justified* acts of civil disobedience. It's outrageous for MSA to try to blur the meaning of the protest in this way.
I wonder if it shows that Jordan is still trying to cover up his misdeeds by influencing the MSA. We need to push for an investigation of Jordan, then the world will understand clearly why the protest was very appropriate.
Jordan himself told the world in a TV interview in 1998 that he thought that protest was appropriate if all the other methods (rallies, petitions, etc) have failed.
