  1. Amen.. ASL is the language of deaf people all over!!1 I was wondering why SLCC was set up.. Oh that old cranky prez did it for attention.

  2. Yes, Ron, I could vividly remember MSSD and KDES faculty voted to stop voicing. As mandatory demonstration schools, they had researches to verify and justify their action but IKJ interfered by removing Dean Deninger from the PreCollege Programs that supported the exclusive use of ASL. We should recall the action by PreCollege Program faculty. People in today’s Laurent Clerc Center are JKF’s proteges to further JKF’s goals, and they need to go, too. They would never understand the action by the 1992 PreCollege faculty.

  3. This is a very important topic and ASL must be included as a language for the Deaf. I cannot stress this enough Gallaudet MUST focus on the needs of the students on campus.

American Sign Language (ASL) is a language with a system like English and etc. Language gives us power and status. It is worth fighting for because it is our basic human rights. Gallaudet needs to look at the big picture and promote ASL in schools.

ASL is dying slowly at Gallaudet and that was intentional by the Gallaudet’s administration.

I pray that President Davila will put ASL issues within his top “To Do” list for Gallaudet University.

Gallaudet is supposed to be the expert in ASL Lingusitics and they are not because of the previous administration’s priorities.

Fight for the Deaf children’s right to ASL in schools.

  4. I absolutely agree with the ASL issues - Gallaudet is supposed to be the leader of ASL - since it lives and breaths ASL!!!

I myself am a CI user and I don’t agree with SLCC being there!

If I was a student at Gallaudet and want appointments for CI programming or even AV therapy - I can do that OFF THE CAMPUS!! Nothing to do with Gallaudet. There are PLENTY of audiologists everywhere - and I can imagine there are plenty in that area so leave Gallaudet out and leave it for the Deaf Community.

Offer a bus trip for those who wish to have appointments for their CI or whatever…but why on campus?

Diversity - I’m all for that. But ASL is the core at Gallaudet.

Stop the oppression on ASL and promote Deaf Culture and the ASL language. I’d love to see more professors like Carl, for example, leading the way.

Isn’t that why many deafies go to Gallaudet in the first place?

It’s the money thing as many have pointed out… how can you fight the purpose of goals if $$$$ are donated to Gallaudet that are specifically for hearing/speech “research”?

We need more donators for the ASL-centered department. And yes, also to change policies at Gallaudet.

Who are the biggest donators? Would it be a good idea for those people to come via vlogs and explain how they’ve been donating and perhaps they can be of help spreading the news to deaf communities all across the nations of the world??

    Sorry for rambling.

    Mel

  5. Is there any alumni committee to put the constant pressures on the Gallaudet admninstration for implenting the ASL policy?

Many people already forgot the “ASL Now” movement at Gally during the Fall 1996 (?)

  6. I am agreeing with all above so much and say same thing above.
Please do something with SLCC and change it.
