Celebrating Deaf History and Gallaudet

April 11-13, 2007
Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University
Washington, D.C.

The 150 Years on Kendall Green: Celebrating Deaf History and Gallaudet conference will take place on April 11-13, 2007. Gallaudet University will mark the sesquicentennial of the founding of the Columbia Institution for the Deaf, the parent of today’s Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (including the Model Secondary School for the Deaf and the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School). The conference will celebrate the remarkable history of the founding of Kendall Green and its growth into the most important university for Deaf people worldwide. An exciting ensemble of distinguished scholars will present papers at this time of celebration and reflection of the history of the storied campus and its importance to Deaf history in the United States. The first of two keynote presenters is James M. McPherson, Professor Emeritus of Princeton University and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era. McPherson will discuss the economic, social, and political context of Washington, DC and the United States when Kendall Green and the National Deaf-Mute College (later renamed Gallaudet University) was founded, a time of political turmoil at the end of the Civil War.

Dr. Paddy Ladd (University of Bristol) will deliver a keynote presentation on 20th century manifestations of Deafhood, particularly concerning Deaf subalterns and Deaf resistance from a historical perspective. Ladd will examine how Deafhood has manifested itself from the mid 20th century to the present and what changes it has undergone in this period and the causes of these changes.

The extraordinary ensemble of presenters and speakers for the conference feature Douglas Baynton, Lucille Blackwell, Lois Bragg, Diana Gates, Jessica Cuculick, David DeLorenzo, Noah Drezner, Rebecca Edwards, Meredith Filiatreault, Rachel Hartig, Ulf Hedberg, Judy Yaeger Jones, Harlan Lane, Aaron Kelstone, Christopher Kurz, Joseph Murray, Kent Olney, Michael Olson, Lindsey Parker, Doris Stelle, Ronald Sutcliffe, Victor Vodounou, and many other respected scholars.

These scholars will present on the intersection of the assimilation movement with Deaf education during the late 19th and early 20th centuries; Deaf Vineyarders in Maine; the role of African-Americans in Deaf education; women at Gallaudet College during the turn of the 20th century; the evolution of Deaf Theater; new insights on Edward Miner Gallaudet, first president at Gallaudet; the influence of Gallaudet on Deaf education worldwide; and much more. Conference participants also will view the groundbreaking 2-hour PBS documentary Through Deaf Eyes.

  1. Don’t forget that the actual ** sesquicentennial ** of Gallaudet is going to be very soon on February 16, 2007.

You can read the original federal charter of Gallaudet (from 1857) here:
