Dear friends and members of the university community:
On this beautiful December day, please look toward the Tower Clock and
note its juxtaposition to the United States Capitol. Like you, I see the
double symbolism of this picturesque panorama. Both the Tower Clock and
the United States Capitol symbolize hope for all that is best in
humanity and society.
Throughout its history, Gallaudet University has served as a beacon for
those who seek hope for a better future. It continues to do so today.
Our students, our faculty, our staff, our staff, and the many people
whom the university has served through its pre-college, academic,
research, community, and continuing education programs are all grateful
for the university’s service. Each of us who sets foot on Kendall
Green acquires a greater appreciation for the rich diversity and the
inclusiveness of our community.
No one truly leaves Gallaudet. Our interim president, Dr. Robert R.
Davila, said it eloquently as he opened his acceptance speech on Sunday
afternoon: “So, I’m home again.” Indeed he is, and we should stand
ready to assist and support Dr. Davila as he spearheads our efforts to
transform the university to what it is meant to be—a vital and vibrant
community of excellence in everything it does in the service of
humankind.
We are faced with more, and greater, challenges than ever before. I ask
that we come together and work together toward mutual understanding and
respect in the university community. The challenges we face—some of
them immediate challenges, some of them longer-term—are critical to
the future of Gallaudet University. We must preserve our accreditation
by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. We must improve our
PART rating. We must ensure that we have adequate human, fiscal, and
physical capital to continue the mission of the university and attain
its strategic goals. Above all, we must uphold the status of Gallaudet
University as the educational institution of choice for students who are
deaf and hard of hearing.
This message may seem somber, especially as we near the holiday season,
but I ask that we collectively take stock of ourselves. Each and every
one of us can and should contribute to the university’s renewal with
full enthusiasm. Let us “recharge” ourselves with our families and
friends during winter break.
When we come back, let us begin anew. Let us work with Dr. Davila as he
leads us to greater heights. Let the Tower Clock shine brightly on us as
we begin this new chapter in Gallaudet’s history.
With much affection and best wishes for the holiday season,
Stephen F. Weiner, Ed.D.,’77 and G-’80
Associate Professor
Department of Communication Studies

Subject: Message to the Gallaudet Community
Importance: High
Good morning folks,
Let us be thankful for this warm beautiful December day, with nary a
cloud in the blue sky.
I want to share with each and every one of you the pressing need to
close ranks and line up in support of the Interim President—Dr.
Davila. As I shared with the Board on Saturday morning, when they
asked me what I thought were the best credentials for the interim
position, I stated that all three candidates bring totally different
packages of strengths and interests to this position, and that it was
the Board’s task to find the degree of best fit.
I fully support their choice and am asking all of you to do likewise.
Gallaudet is in a Code Red Alert at this moment of its history.
Additionally, I am convinced that Dr. Davila will pull together a
cohesive, effective, and highly functioning management team.
The entire interview process was pre-eminently fair, and the actual
Board interview was engaging, pleasant, and authentic. And so with all
that said, I leave with the attached message for this upcoming season of
peace.
With blessings on all of your families, I wish you safe travels during
this holiday season.
Sincerely,
wjam
